About The Position

Des Moines Performing Arts offers a hands-on internship supporting the Iowa High School Musical Theater Awards Showcase, a signature statewide event celebrating student achievement in musical theater. This short-term, high-impact role is ideal for students interested in arts administration, event management, and arts education. Interns work alongside professional staff and guest artists, gaining direct experience supporting a large-scale production and student-centered program. You’ll contribute meaningfully to both behind-the-scenes coordination and on-the-ground program delivery, while building skills in organization, communication, and live event execution.

Requirements

  • Must be a college student, sophomore year or above
  • Interest in arts administration, theater, music education, or related fields
  • Enthusiasm for working with high school students in an arts setting
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to take initiative and adapt in a dynamic environment
  • Clear and professional communication skills
  • Collaborative mindset and positive attitude

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in theater, music, or arts education settings
  • Ability to read music
  • Familiarity with Excel or Google Sheets
  • Experience supporting events, camps, or rehearsals

Responsibilities

  • Maintain and update program tracking documents (spreadsheets, schedules, contact lists)
  • Organize and manage music submissions and licensing documentation
  • Assemble materials, including music books, signage, and rehearsal resources
  • Prepare certificates, awards, and school recognition packets
  • Coordinate awards distribution for participating schools
  • Help facilitate group activities and foster a welcoming ensemble environment
  • Supervise students during rehearsals, transitions, and breaks
  • Support rehearsal logistics (room setup, materials, communication with staff and students)
  • Assist with basic technical needs such as operating sound equipment
  • Record and organize rehearsal videos for participant review
  • Contribute to a safe, inclusive, and well-managed experience for all students
  • Observe and interact with guest director/choreographer and music director
  • Support front- and back-of-house needs during the showcase
  • Operate teleprompter for student speakers and guest presenters
  • Help ensure a smooth, professional experience for performers, staff, and audience members
