Job Title: Education Development Coach Administrative: 0% FLSA Status: Non-Exempt Department: Quality Systems Programmatic: 100% Employment Contract: No Reports To: Education Development Manager Pay Grade: 10 Work Location: Main Office Job Purpose Summary The Education Development Coach at Orange County Head Start (OCHS) is a catalyst for transformative teaching, empowering our educators to deliver exceptional early childhood experiences. This role fuels the development and execution of a dynamic professional development system, directly impacting the quality of education and care for our children. Through expert CLASS monitoring, personalized coaching, and targeted training, the Coach cultivates a culture of continuous improvement and ensures compliance with Head Start Performance Standards and the Head Start Act of 2007. Collaborating with educators and leadership, the Coach identifies developmental needs and creates engaging, impactful learning experiences that elevate teaching practices, fostering program excellence and empowering every child to thrive.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, Human Development, or a related field required.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in early childhood education, preferably in a Head Start or federally funded preschool program.
  • Deep understanding of early childhood development, inclusive practices, and developmentally appropriate instruction.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and coaching skills.
  • Ability to build trust and foster growth-oriented relationships with adult learners.
  • Highly organized, tech-savvy, and comfortable using data to drive decisions.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Excel, Teams, Word) and comfortable learning new platforms
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
  • Able to create and deliver compelling presentations to both large and small groups.
  • Ability to write clear, well-structured reports, internal communications, training materials, and correspondence.
  • Must be able to prioritize and manage multiple tasks to meet stringent deadlines.
  • Excellent project management track record along with a passion for continuous learning.
  • Ability to relate positively and effectively with staff at all levels.
  • Encourages confidence in new or remedial learners.
  • Ability to work in a team-oriented environment; build collaborative work relationships and work effectively with others; analytical ability with great attention to detail.
  • Comfortable working in a fast-moving dynamic environment.
  • Must have a valid California driver's license and proof of insurance for driving to centers, meetings, and training venues and successfully comply with OCHS’s requirements relative to fingerprinting and criminal background checks.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in a related field is a plus.
  • Valid CLASS observer certification (or ability to obtain within a designated period) preferred.
  • Experience in using Practice-Based Coaching, CLASS assessments, and curriculum fidelity tools are highly desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Professional Coaching System Implementation Deliver a comprehensive teacher professional development system using data from monitoring, CLASS assessments, OCHS Self-Assessment, and child outcome data.
  • Collaborate with Center Directors and Education Managers to identify specific learning needs and customize training and coaching efforts that reflect site-specific goals.
  • Plan, schedule, and deliver engaging coaching aligned with identified staff development needs.
  • Provide additional training as necessary to ensure teacher professional development and performance in accordance with requirements from Head Start Performance Standards and the Head Start Act of 2007 for teaching staff, center directors and related education staff.
  • Classroom Observation and Assessment Conduct CLASS and curriculum fidelity observations and debriefs to evaluate classroom quality and instructional effectiveness.
  • Prepare timely documentation and reports to identify trends and inform the teacher professional development system for additional teacher training and coaching needs.
  • Partner with Inclusion and Education teams to strengthen classroom management and instructional quality.
  • Conduct debriefs with teaching staff and Center Directors to review the results of CLASS observations and curriculum fidelity assessments, and facilitate meaningful feedback discussions following coaching sessions.
  • Practice-Based Coaching & Follow-Up Utilize the Practice-Based Coaching (PBC) model to support individual teacher growth.
  • Review CLASS assessment results and work collaboratively with teaching staff to set goals and develop action plans for individualized professional growth.
  • Prioritize and plan for necessary in-person coaching as a result of CLASS assessment results and individualized professional growth plan.
  • Maintain agency-wide data and reports to track and implement teacher professional development activities for individual staff.
  • Provide consistent in-person coaching and technical assistance to classroom teams.
  • Provide related training and technical assistance to Teaching Staff as determined by CLASS and curriculum fidelity trends.
  • Create training content according to objectives.
  • Prepare training schedules and agendas that align with the teacher's schedules and responsibilities.
  • Develop and maintain a range of learning materials Support for Teacher Coaching Academy Provide guidance and mentorship to teacher coaches and teaching staff participating in the Teacher Coaching Academy, ensuring that coaching activities are coordinated with the CLASS evaluation calendar and completed within required deadlines to maintain compliance with Head Start Performance Standards.
  • Data-Driven Coaching & Evaluation Analyze coaching and training data to inform planning and continuously refine coaching practices.
  • Track coaching outcomes and professional development activities using agency systems.
  • Evaluate and enhance coaching content and interactions based on feedback and learning outcomes.
  • Relationship Building & Collaboration Foster strong, respectful relationships with teaching staff, Center Directors, Education Managers, and cross-functional teams to support a positive and effective work environment.
  • Receive and implement guidance from supervisors with professionalism and openness.
  • Demonstrate the ability to work independently, while actively contributing to a supportive and cohesive team dynamic.
  • Foster strong, respectful relationships with department colleagues.
  • Show a strong commitment to adult learning by motivating and empowering teachers to expand their knowledge and instructional skills.
  • Actively participate in monthly Education Development Meetings, committees, projects and other agency-wide initiatives..
  • Share key learnings from classroom coaching experiences and external training opportunities to contribute to a culture of shared learning and innovation.
  • Other Essential Job Duties Demonstrate a sincere interest in early childhood development.
  • Maintain professionalism, confidentiality, and adherence to all agency policies.
  • Serve as a positive role model in appearance, communication, and behavior.
  • Demonstrate a consistent in-person presence to observe, coach and support educators during their regular teaching hours.
  • Ability to travel regularly to assigned work locations; occasional domestic travel may be required.
  • Maintain clean, safe, and organized workspaces.
  • Maintain timelines and due dates of job-related activities via Microsoft Office.
  • Demonstrate regular, reliable, and punctual attendance as an essential function of the role.
  • Assist in the recruitment of children and volunteers.
  • Assist in obtaining non-federal matching funds (in-kind)
  • Take on other duties as needed to support the mission and operational needs of the agency, as directed by supervisors or administration.
  • Fulfill responsibilities as a Mandated Reporter as defined by California’s Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act (CANRA)
  • Maintain strict confidentiality by discussing staff, children, and families only on a need-to-know basis.
