The Emergency Department Technician performs a wide range of patient-related duties under the supervision of a registered nurse or medical provider. These duties include direct patient care such as wound care, managing orthopedic injuries, preparing patients for medical assessment, monitoring vital signs and telemetry, and performing IV access and blood draws with proper labeling. The technician is also responsible for collecting and labeling patient specimens like urine and stool. The role involves assisting medical providers and nurses during critical events such as Strokes, STEMIs, CathLab Activations, and Trauma Activations. The ED Tech must be proficient with various medical equipment and procedural applications, including setting up rooms for pelvic exams and moderate sedations, and operating a Nitrous Oxide machine. Accurate and professional documentation of all patient care and interactions is essential. Further patient support includes assisting with safe ambulation, repositioning, and basic hygiene needs like bathroom assistance, dressing, and undressing. The technician also prepares patients for discharge by discontinuing IVs, collecting final vitals, and assisting with dressing and ambulation. A key aspect of the role is the ability to de-escalate and interact effectively with aggressive, angry, or unstable patients. Additionally, the ED Tech handles clerical duties, including cleaning, stocking, organizing, and preparing the ED environment, as well as performing basic equipment maintenance.
