About The Position

The Emergency Department Technician performs a variety of patient-related duties under the guidance of a registered nurse or medical provider. Key responsibilities include wound care, management of orthopedic injuries, preparing patients for medical assessment, monitoring vital signs and telemetry, performing IV access and blood draws, and collecting patient specimens. The technician assists providers and RNs during critical events such as Strokes, STEMIs, and Trauma Activations. This role requires knowledge of various medical equipment and procedural applications, including setting up patient rooms for specific exams and procedures. Accurate documentation of patient care, assisting with patient mobility, hygiene, and discharge preparations are also crucial. The ED Tech must possess de-escalation skills for interacting with aggressive or unstable patients and perform clerical duties such as cleaning, stocking, and organizing the ED environment and basic equipment maintenance. The position is within Bozeman Health, emphasizing a commitment to caring for the communities of Southwest Montana.

Requirements

  • High School degree or equivalent
  • American Heart Association BLS
  • One year Emergency Department or EMS experience or Two years direct patient care experience
  • Knowledge of a variety of medical equipment and procedural applications
  • Knowledge of patient room set up for pelvic exams and moderate sedations including the setup of Nitrous Oxide machine
  • On-time completion of all required education as assigned per DNV requirements, Bozeman Health policy, and other registry requirements
  • Demonstrates sound judgement, patience, and maintains a professional demeanor at all times

Responsibilities

  • Performs a variety of patient-related duties under the guidance of the registered nurse or medical provider
  • Performs wound care
  • Manages orthopedic injuries
  • Rooms and prepares patients for medical assessment
  • Appropriately places patient on telemetry monitors
  • Performs regular vital signs monitoring
  • Performs appropriate IV access and blood draw procedures including proper patient labelling
  • Appropriately collects a variety of patient specimens (urine and stool) including proper labelling
  • Assists Providers and RNs in the setup and implementation of patient care during events such as Strokes, Tele Strokes, STEMIs, CathLab Activations, Trauma Activations
  • Accurately and professionally documents all patient care/interactions
  • Provides safe ambulation trials
  • Performs patient repositioning
  • Assists with bathroom needs, dressing and undressing, and basic hygiene needs
  • Prepares patients for discharge including discontinuation of IVs, collection of final complete vitals, assisting in dressing, and ambulation
  • Possesses skills for de-escalation and interfacing with aggressive, angry, and/or unstable patients
  • Performs clerical duties for the patient care area including cleaning, stocking, organizing and preparing the ED Environment as well as basic equipment maintenance
  • Demonstrates skills as a receptionist and departmental liaison
  • Stocks supplies and provides equipment or supplies to providers/RNs as requested
  • Documents Patient Care
  • Applies splints, wound dressings, cleans and irrigates wounds, ambulation trials, and monitors telemetry and vital signs
  • Prepares exam rooms for incoming patients
  • Attends required education to remain competent in various areas including stroke education
