Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED
  • Healthcare Provider BLS certification
  • Current New Mexico EMT Basic License or National Registry of EMTs Basic License

Responsibilities

  • Implements MD orders under supervision of an RN as allowed under this purpose description.
  • Splint application
  • Wound irrigation and preparation for suturing
  • 12 lead EKGs
  • Foley catheter insertion
  • Venipuncture for the purpose of obtaining blood samples
  • Peripheral IV insertion once completion of training
  • Point of care (POC) testing includes glucose, urine dip, strep, and pregnancy testing, iStat testing of venous and arterial blood samples and blood alcohol testing via breathalyzer analysis
  • Upon initiation by an RN or MD, application of restraint or seclusion in an emergency situation in order to ensure the immediate physical safety of patients, staff, or visitors when other less restrictive interventions have been deemed ineffective
  • Act as an observer for a restrained or secluded patient
  • Spinal immobilization and vehicle extrication for patients self-presenting to the ED with suspected spinal injury
  • Performance of CPR as indicated and/or directed, including BVM ventilation and chest compressions
  • Set up suture trays and central line trays according to sterile procedure
  • Set up of rapid infuser, chest drainage systems, and suction equipment
  • Provides patient education and training in the use of crutches
  • Responds as a member of the ED Code team to patients requiring resuscitation in other departments on the first floor of the hospital for the purposes of performing CPR
  • Performs as a member of the trauma resuscitation team
  • Under triage RN supervision, performs quick look triage and directs patients to registration, the triage RN or immediately to a treatment space as indicated by patient condition.
  • Performance of twelve (12) lead EKGs within ten (10) minutes of arrival for patients presenting with chest pain
  • POC testing per protocol
  • Take and document vital signs.
  • Repeat vital signs per policy on patients waiting in the ED lobby
  • Receives and documents EMS patient reports from the field, advises the Charge RN and/or MD of patient condition, and whether the patient meets trauma, stroke or stemi alert criteria
  • Acts as a patient and family advocate.
  • Recognize changes in patient condition and report this information to an RN or MD as indicated.
  • Performs Legal Blood Alcohol blood draws at the request of Law Enforcement personnel
  • Documents all procedures and patient care interventions performed in the patient care record
  • Acts in capacity as department unit secretary
  • Acts as an observer or sitter for At Risk Patients requiring observation
  • Transport of stable patients to and from the radiology department and to inpatient care units
  • Assists with the transportation of patients to and from the helipad
  • Assists with lifting and transfer of patients
  • Performs daily duties of POC quality control checks, stocking, and temperature checks as outlined on the Tech Daily Assignment sheet
  • When acting in capacity as Lead Tech, ensures that all daily tech duties are assigned and completed
  • Reports to the charge nurse or ED Support Services Coordinator any broken or malfunctioning equipment
  • Utilizes universal precautions and infection control procedures according to hospital policy
  • Cleans patient rooms and patient monitoring equipment between patient care episodes
  • Perform suture removal on patients over the age of sixteen (16)
  • Acts as member of the procedural sedation team
  • Defibrillation as directed by the ED code team using an AED
  • Removal of NG tubes under supervision or direction of an RN or MD
  • Performs other duties as requested/assigned
