About The Position

General Summary Responsible for the successful operation of assigned functions and for integrating activities with other major organizational units. Establishes objectives, develops and implements plans to achieve corporate goals. Determines the department structure and directs staff to carry out plans. Measures results and takes appropriate corrective actions to ensure achievement of objectives. Develops, proposes and implements nursing policies. POSITION SUMMARY: • Provides oversight and management of the Emergency Department. • Ensures nursing related tasks are being completed in a safe, competent, appropriate and timely manner. • Monitors and ensures complete and adequate documentation and record keeping by the Nursing Staff. • Ensures a safe and accurate medication administration process is being adhered to by the Nursing Staff. • Follows up on medication occurrences to determine cause and possible prevention strategies for future occurrences. • Works closely with the Director of Nursing , House Supervisors and Staff Nurses to accomplish nursing goals. • Consistently demonstrates leadership qualities and serves as a clinical and professional role model for other personnel throughout the facility • Actively participates in hospital activities aimed at achieving the mission and vision of Caldwell Medical Center and the Department of Nursing • Is accountable for and ensures the delivery of consistently high-quality emergency services. • • Is accountable for the effective, efficient and safe operations of the emergency department ensuring that the objectives of the department and the organization are being met • Ensures appropriate organizational and patient safety practices are in use • Promotes good public relations through contacts with patients, practitioners, visitors, employees, peers and the public at large • Utilizes good interpersonal skills and strives to achieve growth in management, leadership, nursing knowledge and skills • Maintains and ensures confidentiality of patient information • Varies ‘hours of work’ to enhance communication with and increase exposure to night shift and weekend shift employees • Works 2 clinical shifts per week in addition to 2 eight hour shifts per week designated for administrative duties. POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES ED care for individuals across the lifespan with perceived or actual physical or emotional alterations of health that are undiagnosed or require further interventions. They deliver care to patients utilizing the nursing process of assessment, planning, intervention, implementation, and evaluation. Nurses collaborate with other professional disciplines to ensure effective patient care delivery and achievement of desired patient outcomes. Nurses effectively interact with patient and significant others, while maintaining the standard of professional nursing. ED Nurses provide care for patients from various types of illness or trauma requiring emergency attention and must be able to recognize and effectively treat life-threatening conditions.

Requirements

  • Graduate of accredited school of Nursing with an Associate Degree
  • current RN licensed to practice in the State of Kentucky
  • BLS certification required and ACLS and PALS within 6 months of hire
  • Two years of nursing experience or experience as an EMT or Paramedic
  • Excellent human relations and oral/written communication skills.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills.
  • Must have adequate knowledge and skills necessary to lead and direct others.
  • Must be able to function independently with minimal oversight and supervision.
  • Must have sound judgment and decision making abilities.
  • Must be self motivated, and have the ability to prioritize and complete tasks/assignments within given time frames.

Nice To Haves

  • Three to five years of varied hospital based nursing experience with previous supervisory/management experience.
  • BSN preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Direct the activities of all unit personnel to provide timely, efficient and quality emergency care to patients
  • Provide superior service to patients while maintaining cost effective staffing mixes and patterns
  • Provide ongoing education/training opportunities to staff members to insure professional development and their ability to provide quality patient care
  • Direct the integration of emergency patient care through cooperation with mutual patient care areas and physicians to allow high quality well-rounded services.
  • Provide for positioning of the medical center in the Emergency Medical System of the County along with the integration of the Trauma Service with the County’s Emergency Preparedness Plan.
  • Promote the image of the department and the medical center to the community through joint consultations between physicians, patients, and families.
  • Direct the development of the unit operating budget and maintain necessary controls to assure compliance with budgeted expenses, resources and staff projections.
  • Select train and evaluate subordinates and initiate personnel actions in accordance with Human Resources policy and organization philosophy.
  • Complete required continuous training and education, including department specific requirements.
  • Performs triage on each patient using the Emergency Severity Index (ESI) and correctly prioritizes his or her care.
  • Collects objective and subjective data from the patient using a focused assessment. Maintains physical, emotional, and psychosocial support to the patient, family and others as appropriate.
  • Implements appropriate interventions according to established organizational policies/protocols as warranted by the patient’s status (ex. Wound care, splints, etc.)
  • Communicates significant findings to team members and physician.
  • Implements patient care based on physician orders and/or established protocols.
  • Is proficient when responding to emergency situations such as full arrest, emergency childbirth, trauma, etc.
  • Proficient in accurately documenting care the patient receives using the electronic medical record. Proficient in completing all required forms for patient care.
  • Prepares, administers, and records prescribed medications. Reports adverse reactions to medications or treatments in accordance with the policy and procedure.
  • Displays professionalism while completing multiple urgent tasks in a timely manner.
  • Organizes, directs and coordinates functions and activities of the ED .
  • Objectively evaluates staff performance related to patient care and gives directives for corrective action. Works with the Director of Nursing and House Supervisors to provide feedback to employees concerning their job performance. Objectively completes employee performance appraisals and disciplinary actions as necessary (with assistance and input from the Director of Nursing and House Supervisors).
  • Coordinates and provides training and orienting of new departmental staff as needed. Works with the Education Coordinator and House Supervisors to ensure that new staff members receive adequate instruction/training when assigned to preceptors within the department.
  • Assures preceptors within the department are providing consistent, high quality orientation to new or cross-training staff members.
  • Creates and maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality improvement program, safety, environmental and infection control standards. Ensures staff compliance with these standards. Works with the Quality Director to assure the policy software is functioning properly and available to all staff members. Assures all staff members are proficient in accessing policies utilizing the policy software.
  • Maintains departmental reports and records and collects statistical data for administrative and regulatory purposes.
  • Establishes and implements ED specific goals and objectives in keeping with overall nursing and organizational goals and objectives.
  • Establishes and maintains adequate and effective communication between the ED and ancillary departments for the purpose of problem solving and improved patient care processes. Utilizes appropriate lines of communication within the organization.
  • Acts as a resource person to the nursing staff and provides appropriate and timely feedback concerning their performance.
  • Ensures that appropriate nursing standards and practices are met.
  • Develops and maintains a master ED schedule, approves schedule changes, approves/disapproves requests for time off and vacations. Utilizes established guidelines for granting/denying requested time off and schedule restrictions (number of allowable days off at a given time, etc). Works closely with the House Supervisors and Director of Nursing in relation to scheduling. Gets completed schedule to Director of Nursing in a timely manner for approval.
  • Assures daily staffing is within budget according to established staffing plans
  • Develops the ED departmental budget. Utilizes the budget to effectively manage supplies and labor. Assures supplies are maintained according to established PAR levels. Prepares biweekly payroll. Documents and justifies the need for new/additional staff and/or equipment. Works closely with the House Supervisors and Director of Nursing to accomplish this task.
  • Acts as liaison between personnel, Administration, Medical Staff and other department’s managers.
  • Demonstrates professional, courteous behavior and image to patients, families, staff members, practitioners and others.
  • Attends required meetings and actively participates on nursing and organization wide committees. Attends administrative level meetings as required or requested.
  • Promotes and ensures professional staff development. Ensures adequate ongoing communication with the nursing staff for the upward and downward dissemination of information.
  • Interacts with others (on the phone or in person) in a courteous, positive, professional and appropriate manner.
  • Works cooperatively with others. Has respect for and an understanding of the contributions of all team members.
  • Communicates with the Director of Nursing on a regular and ongoing basis concerning the overall operation and function of the ED. Offers suggestions for the improvement of processes and overall patient care. Implements changes as directed. Communicates changes effectively.
  • Promotes and ensures a safe environment that allows for the delivery of high quality patient care.
  • Protects patient and organizational (hospital business) confidentiality by practicing, promoting and enforcing appropriate staff communication practices.
  • Monitors and ensures compliance with policies, procedures, regulations, and standards and takes corrective action when violations occur.
  • Ensures practitioner orders are carried out using sound nursing judgment.
  • Provides direct patient care and evaluates outcomes. Consults with others as required and adjusts nursing care processes as indicated to ensure optimal patient care and patient outcomes.
  • Documents adequately and appropriately. Ensures that documentation reflects current patient status, changes in patient status, care and treatment planned and currently being rendered, patient response to treatment and care, etc.
  • Assists in staffing emergencies by assuming the role of Staff Nurse and demonstrates the ability to function adequately in these nursing roles.
  • Assesses patient and family needs. Ensures adequate patient care based on patient needs by performing and/or appropriately delegating tasks as required.
  • Works closely with the Infection Preventionist to assure adequate, ongoing IC measures are in place and being practiced consistently on the Nursing Unit.
  • Regular Attendance. Works shifts as required. Occasionally takes “call”.
  • Performs duties as assigned by the Director of Nursing with a high degree of accuracy and timeliness.
  • Responsible for Caldwell Medical Center Emergency Preparedness.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
