About The Position

Work for the IMF. Work for the World. Economist/Senior Economist - WAEMU (AFRW1) The African Department Western I Division has an opening for an Economist to work on the WAEMU desk. The WAEMU monetary union includes 8 countries, including fragile states, low-income countries and frontier markets. As such the position qualifies for the LIC/Fragile states career requirements. Most countries are under or interested in an IMF program, which would be handled by the respective country team. The economist will be part of a team conducting the annual Regional Discussion (equivalent to an AIV Consultations, but at the regional level), and a Staff Visit, hence 2 missions a year. The next Regional Discussion will be in February 2026 with an expected board meeting in April. The main counterparts are the regional central bank (BCEAO), the financial supervisor, and the WAEMU Commission. The selected candidate will be involved—jointly with the rest of the team—in the analysis of all sectors of the economy as well as contribute to policy discussions and document drafting. The team also organizes monthly meetings with all 8 WAEMU country teams. He/she will also be expected to carry out research and analytical work on the region, and if interested contribute to the analytical networks of the department. The country team provides an excellent work environment that encourages initiative and independent thinking, combined with efforts to ensure good work-life balance. Requirements

In addition to the qualifications set forth in the job standards, the successful candidate must have a strong background in macroeconomics with good knowledge of Fund policies and practices.
He/she should have a strong interest in analytical work and cross-country surveillance.
He/she should have excellent drafting and be able to manage his/her time well.
He/she must also have sound analytical and data management skills as well as strong interpersonal and teamwork skills.
