About The Position

Economic Justice Practice Leader Overview Still She Rises, Inc. (SSR) provides free legal representation to pregnant women, women with children, and women who are child caregivers and have been brought into the criminal and family policing legal systems. Still She Rises seeks to employ highly motivated individuals with a commitment to indigent defense. Founded in North Tulsa, Still She Rises offers client-centered, innovative, and holistic legal representation. We honor the dignity of the women we serve by championing our clients’ individual goals while also targeting systemic issues impacting the larger community. The Economic Justice Practice advocates for individuals seeking relief from the burdens of criminal records and criminal court debt. Representation also includes identifying and pursuing legal avenues for relief from governmental restrictions on access to employment licenses, housing, or driver licenses. Practice Leader will provide oversight and implementation of the day-to-day operations and development of the Economic Justice Practice. Working collaboratively with the leadership team, the Practice Leader will be responsible for ensuring that the Economic Justice Practice is aligned with the strategic goals set out by the Executive Director. The ideal Economic Justice Practice Leader will be a leader who showcases a record of investment in client-centered holistic legal advocacy and is invigorated by developing others.

Requirements

At least 5 years of experience in the field of civil legal aid or a related field
J.D. from an American Bar Association accredited law school
Membership in good standing to the Oklahoma bar or eligibility for admission on motion to the Oklahoma bar (requires continuous practice of law for at least three years of the five years immediately preceding application for admission)
Experience supervising attorneys
Ability to litigate and confidently engage in skillful negotiations with judges, prosecutors, and other actors within the systems our clients navigate.
Excellent research, writing and courtroom advocacy skills
Ability and desire to work collaboratively in interdisciplinary teams
A commitment to defending indigent individuals charged with criminal offenses in the North Tulsa community
Experience and interest in working with racially and socioeconomically oppressed communities
Ability to think critically and quickly on their feet
Strong communication and interpersonal skills
Strong learning orientation i.e. can learn from mistakes, have a desire to continuously improve and grow, and have the capacity to foster this with direct reports.
If hired, out of state applicants must promptly submit the appropriate materials necessary for reciprocity admission motion.

Responsibilities

Direct Representation of Clients (limited caseload)
Represent clients in expungement and court debt relief matters in a variety of jurisdictions and venues
Collaborate with other members of a client’s defense team, including advocates, resource specialists, and investigators to develop and implement a comprehensive strategy to combat the variety of legal and bureaucratic burdens placed on a client.
Collaborate with other attorneys on representation of a mutual client in multiple venues, including coordinating legal strategies, co-counseling appearances/hearings.
Supervision of Economic Justice Practice Attorneys
Supervise the day-to-day work of a paralegal and 2-4 attorneys including case assignments, practice priority implementation, and supervision of appearances, hearings and trials as needed.
Support EJP attorneys in their professional development including providing regular feedback, coaching staff in applying best practices, and identifying appropriate resources and training opportunities.
Economic Justice Practice Development
Further develop and elevate the standard of practice through innovative motions, arguments, and strategies
Collaborate with other members of the leadership team to:
Develop and implement training materials for new staff as well as ongoing skill and knowledge trainings.
Develop and implement policies, procedures and tools used to develop the practice area and the interdisciplinary practice as a whole.
Develop and implement opportunities for strategic expansion of the scope of EJP representation.
