About The Position

The Enforcement and Compliance Division (ECD) of the DEPT OF TRANSPORTATION is seeking a Full Authority Lateral Officer to join an innovative and collaborative team focused on driving a safer transportation system for Arizona. This unique division maintains the safety and compliance of the transportation network around the state at its borders. Under the general supervision of a Sergeant, the Officer's primary focus is public safety, protecting life, property, and the state transportation infrastructure by ensuring the safe and efficient movement of commercial traffic through Arizona. The role involves enforcing all state and federal laws and regulations related to commercial vehicle enforcement and regulatory compliance. Officers are expected to complete all work assignments and training in a timely manner, demonstrate good decision-making, make arrests when necessary, maintain professionalism, testify in court when required, prepare clear and concise written reports, exercise judgment in determining the use of force, and promote compliance with all relevant laws, rules, and regulations. Individuals who have honorably served as a peace officer in Arizona (with lapsed certification) or in another state or federal agency may be eligible to obtain Arizona POST certification through Waiver Testing instead of attending a basic academy course. A Peace Officer Physical Aptitude Test (POPAT) is required, along with a background check and in- and out-of-state travel.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of pertinent State and Federal motor vehicle laws, rules and regulations
  • Knowledge of modern law enforcement methods, best practices and procedures
  • Knowledge of Search and Seizure, rules of evidence and custody of prisoners
  • Knowledge of Defensive tactics
  • Knowledge of First Aid, CPR
  • Knowledge of Court systems, procedures and protocols
  • Knowledge of Activity reporting and accounting procedures established for the work system
  • Knowledge of principles of report writing
  • Have previously served as a certified peace officer in Arizona, another state, or federal agency, and meet all of the minimum qualifications for certification as an Arizona Peace Officer
  • Skilled in interpreting relevant State and Federal motor vehicle laws, rules and regulations
  • Skilled in eliciting factual information and drawing valid conclusions
  • Skilled in establishing and maintaining effective relationships with staff members and the general public
  • Skilled in use and care of firearms
  • Skilled in operating police equipment in emergency situations
  • Skilled in exercising discretion in use of force
  • Skilled in verbal and written communication, writing clear and concise reports
  • Skilled in problem solving and using good judgment
  • Have completed the basic and advanced training that demonstrates substantial comparability to the Arizona basic course
  • Skilled in Google Workspace
  • Ability to prepare clear and concise reports
  • Ability to communicate effectively with staff members and the general public
  • Ability to maintain moral standards and integrity
  • Ability to work as a team and collaborate
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) certification
  • Ability to make effective and reasonable decisions under pressure
  • Ability to operate law enforcement computers, software and database programs
  • Ability to maintain required firearms certification
  • Ability to understand and interpret laws and regulations
  • Ability to obtain an appointment from an Arizona Law Enforcement Agency
  • Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training (AZPOST) Full Authority certification
  • Weapons certified in accordance with AZ P.O.S.T. standards, Arizona Post Firearms Certification
  • Valid Driver's License
  • Possess and retain a current, valid class-appropriate driver’s license for operating a motor vehicle on State business
  • Complete all required driver training
  • Successfully pass all necessary driver’s license record checks
  • Maintain acceptable driving records
  • Maintain the statutorily required liability insurance if operating a personally owned vehicle on state business
  • Successfully complete the Electronic Employment Eligibility Verification Program (E-Verify)
  • Peace Officer Physical Aptitude Test (POPAT) is required
  • Background check is required
  • In and out of-state travel is required

  • Taking appropriate enforcement action as authorized by state and federal motor vehicle and operator laws, rules, and regulations
  • Inspecting vehicles, dealer, and salvage yard operations for compliance with State title and registration requirements
  • Protecting life, property, and the state transportation infrastructure
  • Providing safe and efficient movement of commercial traffic through the State of Arizona
  • Enforcing all state and federal laws and regulations relative to commercial vehicle enforcement and regulatory compliance
  • Completing all work assignments and training in a timely manner
  • Making arrests when necessary
  • Testifying in court when required
  • Preparing clear and concise written reports
  • Exercising judgment in determining use of force
  • Promoting compliance of all state and federal laws, rules and regulations directly related to the duties of the position
