About The Position

This series exists to provide and preserve a safe and efficient transportation system for the traveling public, ensuring courteous, considerate, and prompt service. Positions are assigned based on experience and qualifications. The role is eligible for a $4,000 hiring incentive. The series includes several levels: Highway Operations Worker (entry-level), Highway Operations Tech 1 (apprentice), Highway Operations Tech 2 (entry journey), and Highway Operations Tech 3 (full journey). Each level involves increasing scope of duties, from basic operation of motorized vehicles and equipment, pavement and landscape care, roadside repairs, signing and striping, and material delivery, to environmental compliance and vehicle maintenance. Higher-level positions (Tech 2 and 3) also involve scheduling, assigning, overseeing, inspecting, training, and guiding subordinate staff.

Requirements

  • Highway Operations Worker: Obtain Arizona CDL (Class “A”) permit within 90 days from date of hire and an Arizona Class “A” Commercial Driver’s license (CDL) within 6 months of hire
  • Highway Operations Tech 1-3: Possess an Arizona Class “A” Commercial Driver’s license (CDL) for a manual or automatic transmission and an (N) tanker endorsement prior to the start date
  • Registration with the FMCSA Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse (Clearinghouse) is required for all CDL holders, including authorizing ADOT to conduct limited queries
  • Ability to respond to emergency call outs (24 hours a day, seven days a week) and respond to the Maintenance yard within 30 minutes
  • Ability to lift/carry – push/pull 50 lbs
  • Successfully complete the Electronic Employment Eligibility Verification Program (E-Verify)
  • Highway Operations Worker: 6 months of Roadway/Highway job related experience (may include operating motorized vehicles and heavy-duty equipment and maintenance, signing/striping of roadways, pavement care and preservation, roadway operations, tunnel maintenance, or landscape care and preservation)
  • Highway Operations Tech 1: 1 year of job related Roadway/Highway experience (may include operation of motorized vehicles and heavy-duty equipment and maintenance, signing/striping of roadways, pavement care and preservation, roadway operations, tunnel maintenance, or landscape care and preservation)
  • Highway Operations Tech 2: 2 years of job related Roadway/Highway experience (may include operation of motorized vehicles and heavy-duty equipment and maintenance, signing/striping of roadways, pavement care and preservation, roadway operations, tunnel maintenance, or landscape care and preservation)
  • Highway Operations Tech 3: 3 years of job related Roadway/Highway experience (may include operation of motorized vehicles and heavy-duty equipment and maintenance, signing/striping of roadways, pavement care and preservation, roadway operations, tunnel maintenance, or landscape care and preservation)

Nice To Haves

  • Highway Operations Worker: Preference of six months experience in related fields
  • Additional CDL endorsements based on assigned area (for Tech 1-3)
  • Licensing through the State Board of Pesticide Control to dispense herbicides/pesticides
