About The Position

This position is for an East Asian Studies Liaison Librarian at UT Libraries. The role involves comprehensive management of East Asian Studies collections, including development, content management, and consortium purchasing. The librarian will provide expert research consultation and reference assistance to faculty, students, and the community, maintaining deep expertise in Chinese and Japanese East Asian Studies. Key aspects include fostering relationships with scholars, serving as a primary contact, participating in library committees, engaging in continuous professional development, and delivering information literacy instruction both in-person and online.

Requirements

  • PhD in History with a specialization in East Asian Studies, a closely related field, or foreign equivalent.
  • Specialization in and thorough knowledge of the history and cultures of East Asia.
  • Fluency in Chinese and Japanese (reading and other bibliographic linguistic literacy).
  • Work experience in an academic library.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in person & across multiple media (speaking, writing, in-person, and online), including professional communication in English, Chinese, and Japanese.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the historical and contemporary publishing landscape for East Asian Studies.
  • Experience in digital humanities & scholarly communication.
  • Experience providing in-person and online instruction in an academic setting.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee collection development and content management activities related to East Asian Studies.
  • Represent UT Austin by working with other East Asian libraries/collections for consortium/cooperative purchasing of electronic and print materials.
  • Provide research consultation and reference assistance to faculty, students and the community in the fields of East Asian Studies and at all stages of the research lifecycle.
  • Maintain expertise in the academic fields of East Asian Studies, including in both Chinese and Japanese.
  • Establish and maintain relationships within UTL and the community of scholars and researchers related to East Asian Studies.
  • Serve as primary library contact for faculty and graduate students in the fields of East Asian Studies.
  • Participate in committees and scholarly activities to further the mission of UTL.
  • Keep up with trends and developments in librarianship and participate in professional development opportunities related to East Asian Studies.
  • Conduct information literacy instruction sessions and develop content for East Asia-specific LibGuides, course management systems, and social media.
