About The Position

Provide information, education, and resources that will prepare the participating patient and the family for the birth process. Initiate contact with participating patients following enrollment. Attend prenatal appointments with participating patients when appropriate . Provide labor & delivery and post-partum support to participating patients. Provide on-going support and information to participating patients. Collaborate effectively with ambulatory and hospital teammates and clinicians. Assist families in initiating and strengthening the parent-child relationship . Maintain appropriate documentation of all participating patient encounters in the electronic medical record. Flexible scheduling, including on-call coverage, to attend births of assigned participating patients . Provide back-up assistance to other doulas. Must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served. Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the department's policies and procedures. Age-specific information is developed further in the departmental job standards.

Requirements

  • Completion of an approved training and/or certification program
  • Associate’s Degree.
  • Typically requires at least two year s of relevant childbirth or women’s health experience .
  • Mother/baby in a maternal health setting and/or previous experience as a doula.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills .
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Strong problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to remain calm in high-pressure situations.
  • Knowledge of childbirth techniques, positioning, and comfort measures.
  • Ability to collaborate with care team .
  • Ability to learn about and work with community agencies.
  • Knowledge of breastfeeding support.
  • Computer skills required .
  • Ability to travel between different sites of care, including ambulatory clinics and hospitals .
  • May be exposed to hazardous materials and life-threatening diseases .
  • Availability to be on-call as needed .
  • Flexible hours to meet participating patients’ needs.

Nice To Haves

  • Certified Lactation Counselor preferred.
  • Bachelor's Degree
