Under general supervision, provides continuous emotional and physical support for a woman and her immediate family during the early postpartum period. That can be in a private residence, nursing home, or assisted living facility. Hospice care is available to patients of any age, religion, race, or illness. Hospice care is covered under Medicare, Medicaid, most private insurance plans.

Requirements

  • HS or GED
  • Heart Saver (CPR Certification)
  • Current Maryland Driver’s License and Insurance
  • Prior experience acting as the primary caregiver for children or adults
  • Knowledge of breastfeeding practices
  • Skills in organization
  • Ability to perform light housekeeping
  • Ability to effectively communicate with expectant couples and healthcare providers in stressful situations
  • Ability to foster a positive relationship with potential infant siblings
  • Ability to manage many tasks simultaneously
  • Ability to follow basic cooking instructions/recipe/ prepare nutritious family meals
  • Knowledge of religious and cultural cooking restrictions
  • Comfort level for transportation in clients vehicle of mother, baby and possible siblings to and from doctors’ appointments, carpool, school, etc.
  • Knowledge of properly installed infant car seat

Responsibilities

  • Assists the postpartum mother and family with:
  • At home postpartum care
  • Home organization
  • Infant care and feeding support including
  • Breastfeeding and/or bottle feeding.
  • Maintains a continuous presence with the postpartum mother and family during contracted hours including daytime and/or overnight support
  • Provides emotional support through encouragement, praise, and respite care during postpartum period.
  • Facilitates communication between the woman, partner, and health care providers.
  • Promotes family-infant attachment in the postpartum period.
  • Provides newborn and sibling care.
  • Offers feeding support and guidance (breastfeeding, bottle feeding/pump, formula feeding). Bring baby to and from parents when scheduled and supplement feed only when asked.
  • Performs light housekeeping, home organization meal preparation/planning, and shopping duties.
  • Provides information in the form of printed materials and a lending library during the postpartum period.
  • Maintains accurate and complete client hourly logs for postpartum services
