About The Position

Galaxy clusters are the largest gravitationally bound structures in the Universe. Studying how their number changes with mass and redshift provides important information about cosmology. In order to obtain reliable results, however, it is essential to understand and quantify possible sources of bias that can affect cluster detection and mass measurements. At millimeter wavelengths (one of the most effective regimes for detecting galaxy clusters through the Sunyaev–Zel’dovich effect) a major source of contamination comes from radio-emitting galaxies associated with clusters. Radio sources can bias cluster mass estimates or, in some cases, make cluster detection more difficult. At Argonne National Laboratory, simulations of millimeter-wave sky emission have been developed, including contributions from galaxy clusters, radio sources, and the cosmic infrared background. The student will use these simulations to assess the impact of radio-source contamination in galaxy clusters and to understand how this effect depends on cluster properties.
