About The Position

The Simons Observatory (SO) Small Aperture Telescopes (SATs) are a three-telescope array that is searching for evidence of primordial gravitational waves sourced by an epoch of inflationary expansion in the early universe through observations of the large angular scale polarization in the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB). Each SAT telescope consists of over 10,000 transition-edge sensor detectors in two of four frequency bands that are read out at 200 Hz as the telescopes scan the sky. Transforming this data into maps of the CMB requires many data processing and cleaning steps that have, to date, been implemented in parallel for each frequency band. In this project we will develop a data cleaning method which uses the fact that all telescopes generally observe the same part of the sky and have a frequency-dependent sensitivities to the atmosphere to preferentially filter out atmospheric noise contributions while reducing the filtering of the primordial filters. Education and Experience Requirements The entirety of the appointment must be conducted within the United States. Applicants must be: Currently enrolled in undergraduate or graduate studies at an accredited institution. Graduated from an accredited institution within the past 3 months; or Actively enrolled in a graduate program at an accredited institution. Must be 18 years or older at the time the appointment begins. Must possess a cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. Must be a U.S. citizen or Legal Permanent Resident at the time of application. If accepting an offer, must pass a screening drug test.
