About The Position

This internship will develop a framework to quantify and visualize key resource flows (carbon, energy, and water) across energy system pathways represented in the R&D GREET model. The goal is to create a Sankey-diagram–style tool that uses R&D GREET datasets to clearly depict how resources move and transform across process stages, enabling transparent accounting from upstream production through conversion, distribution, and end use. By assessing these flows, the framework will help quantify material and energy conversion efficiencies, identify bottlenecks and loss points, and evaluate environmental implications at each stage. This capability will provide a quantitative basis for comparing alternative technologies, communicating results to various audiences, and supporting research and decision-making that relies on R&D GREET outputs. The intern will extract and organize the required process-level information from R&D GREET, process and compile the data into a consistent structure suitable for flow analysis, and integrate the results with a newly developed visualization tool that can generate pathway-specific Sankey diagrams on demand. The work will require a solid understanding of energy system supply chains and hands-oncoding to build the data pipeline and visualization framework (with AI-assisted development as appropriate). Expected deliverables include a documented dataand extraction workflow, a working prototype visualization tool, examplediagrams for selected pathways, and guidance for integrating the approach intofuture R&D GREET releases.
