About The Position

This posting will be used to fill a current vacancy in the Line Maintenance Division of the Utilities Department within the City of Oklahoma City. An eligibility list will be established or supplemented for filling future vacancies per provisions of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) Collective Bargaining Agreement. The duties performed are of a specialized nature, involving skills and operations which have been previously acquired. Essential job functions include: responsibility for the supervision of installations of water meters from 5/8 inch to ten inches; inspecting work performed by contractors certified by the City; ensuring the safety of distribution systems; the enforcement of City ordinances related to paving cuts, main repairs, meter installations, waterline replacements and fire hydrant repairs and enforcing safety regulations regarding manpower, material, and equipment usage. The employee receives work assignments in verbal and written form, by radio dispatch or from a list issued by the immediate supervisor. The employee may be required to assist in the completion of a variety of other tasks during adverse weather conditions or seasonal delays in inspection activity. Equipment utilized in the performance of tasks may include: gas-powered water pumps to remove standing or running water; prodders and listening devices to pinpoint location of leaks; rotary drills used for boring holes; jackhammers to break and remove concrete/asphalt; concrete saws; air tapping machines; various hand tools; and operation of a backhoe. The contractual repair or construction crews monitored by the Distribution Systems Inspector often work in and around traffic; therefore, sound judgment regarding the public's safety must be used. Work often includes contact with the public, outside utility agencies, private contractors and other department personnel. Work is subject to review by supervisor's inspection, daily inspection reports, and citizen satisfaction.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of water distribution systems, water mains, water valves, fire hydrants and meter pits.
  • Knowledge of City ordinances related to paving cuts, revocable and boring permits, main repairs, meter installation, and water line replacement and repair.
  • Knowledge of material specifications used in meter installation.
  • Knowledge of construction standards, ordinances, regulations, plans and specifications.
  • Knowledge of and ability to demonstrate and follow safe working practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge of safe operation and efficient utilization of work-related tools and equipment.
  • Ability to supervise and perform tasks associated with main repair, paving cuts, meter installation and water line replacement and repair functions.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to provide verbal instructions to private contractors on installation procedures, for valves, hydrants, and meter installations.
  • Ability to prepare and complete standard forms and work logs.
  • Ability and willingness to supervise the work of a crew.
  • Ability to work with others.
  • Ability to perform work under pressure.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Willingness to assume responsibility for own work and the work of a crew.
  • Possession of a Class C Distribution and Collection Operator license.
  • Possession of a valid Driver License (Operator or higher).
