Dispatchers must have the basic knowledge and skills necessary to assist in providing patient care and transportation. Depending on job setting, receive requests for either air and/or ground medical transport, initiating the mobilization of the appropriate teams and communicating with referring hospitals/services. Ability to multitask, be detail orientated and thorough in completing daily tasks. Ability to deal with high stress situations calmly and effectively while maintaining composure in very difficult situations to collect vital information from callers to determine the severity of a situation and the location to those who need assistance. Listens carefully to collect relevant details and be able to type the details of calls into computers, and speed and accuracy is of importance when responding to emergencies. Effectively uses radios and other forms of communication. Works with growth and development needs of a diverse population. Either setting in the ground or air, perform data entry using the computer, compiling QI (Quality Improvement) data, SharePoint, and typing any other documentation as assigned and maintain access to, and security of, highly sensitive materials. Ability to read and effectively interpret small-scale maps and information from a computer screen to determine locations and provide directions. Searches files, databases or other reference materials to obtain needed information. Depending upon job setting, knowledge to operate the computer software necessary to document flights as well as the skill in radio communications with the medical teams and pilots on medical transports. Maintain a sense of pride and ownership for the program. May require sitting for extended periods of time. Depending on location of position, work hours will vary depending on patient needs. This may include overtime, call, backup call, nights, days, weekends, and holidays. Attends training classes to maintain certification licensure, keep abreast of new developments in the field, or maintain existing knowledge.

Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent is required.
Depending on location of hire and job setting, formal knowledge and training of Emergency Medical Services (EMS) principles, practices, and techniques or relevant dispatch experience is helpful for this role but not required.
Depending on location of hire and job setting, Emergency Medical Dispatch certified or automated external defibrillator (AED) Emergency Medical Dispatch certification should be acquired within six months from date of hire.

Responsibilities

Dispatching air and ground critical care teams for patient transport interfacilities as well as scene requests.
Keeping accurate documentation of all aircraft movements.
Arranging ground transportation as well as other arrangements as necessary.
Communicating patient information to the flight crews.
Initiating emergency response protocols in aircraft and ground transport emergencies.
Updating the emergency relocation bucket with all crew listings for all bases.
Effectively uses radios and other forms of communication such as Microsoft Word and SharePoint; performs a wide range of data entry , compiling Quality Improvement data and any other documentation as assigned while maintaining security of highly sensitive materials.
Searches files, databases or other reference materials to obtain information for pilots, flight teams, and other medical staff as needed.
Files FAA flight plans and analyzes Notice-to Airman; uses flight planning software and other aircraft performance planning products; monitors pilot work rules to assist in making flight go/no-go decisions based on work rule limitations.
Provides excellent written and verbal customer service to all clientele, which includes outside medical facilities, patients, and emergency medical services that work together to provide the highest level of care possible
