About The Position

The Disability Specialist & Service Coordinator assesses eligibility for services and determines reasonable accommodations for students based on documentation from medical professionals, including medical reports and psycho-educational test results. This role primarily serves students with psychological disorders and learning disabilities. Key responsibilities include conducting initial interviews, providing academic advisement, and acting as an advocate for students with disabilities, while also responding to inquiries from faculty, staff, and students. The specialist develops and presents information to build disability awareness within the campus community and participates in university and divisional committees. Additionally, the position involves developing and implementing skill-building programs to enhance academic retention for students with disabilities, identifying and creating appropriate educational materials, and assisting with regular assessments of services and learning outcomes within the department and university.

Requirements

  • Minimum Master’s Degree in Education, Counseling or related field.
  • Up to 2 years of relevant experience (including internships and graduate work) in accommodating the needs of students with disabilities including the interpretation of psycho-educational reports and legislation.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the Americans with Disabilities Act and other applicable laws.
  • Experience working directly with students with disabilities who are in a post-secondary setting.
  • Strong communication, instructional, and counseling skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Certified Rehabilitation Counselors (CRC) preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assess eligibility for services and determine reasonable accommodations based on documentation provided by appropriate medical professionals.
