The Director of Safety, Health, and Environmental (SH&E) role is critical to the success of our SH&E initiatives on our Journey to Zero. The primary objective of this role is to provide leadership with the skills to enhance the safety of our employees and our environmental footprint with a focus on prevention, fostering a culture where safety, health and environment are ingrained as core values. Additionally, this role leads the design, development and implementation of corporate Safety, Health, and Environmental policies, plans, training, and programs in support of Corporate and Operations strategic goals, performance, and objectives. This role collaborates closely with the various stakeholders to inspire and empower SH&E leadership by all employees.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in SH&E related management and/or a scientific discipline, such as engineering, chemistry, bio/life sciences
  • Minimum 10 years’ experience in Safety, Health, and Environmental roles with increasing responsibility.
  • Factory and Corporate experience and knowledge.
  • Comprehensive understanding of ISO 45001 and ISO 14001 and OSHA regulations.
  • Must be capable of working in a fast-paced environment with minimal direct supervision and have strong demonstrated leadership, interpersonal, and self-initiative skills.
  • Working and proven knowledge of and work experience with customers, consumers, regulators, legislators, and trade associations.
  • Knowledge and interpretive ability to state and federal environmental and safety regulations.
  • Good technical understanding of SH&E issues and their relationship to production/engineering, HR and other job functions.
  • Strong demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Must be detailed and results oriented.
  • Ability to build teams throughout all levels and functions of the Site with respect, tact and win-win outcomes.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills are required along with the ability to communicate effectively and influence across a diverse range of people from Corporate /Division leadership to a site field associate.
  • Technical writing skills (policies, procedures, reference manuals, and training materials)
  • Ability to communicate complex regulatory and technical issues in lay terms.
  • Demonstrated negotiation and influencing skills.
  • Ability to meld and balance technical with overall company and third-party needs, expectations, mandates, and benefits.
  • Deliver good SH&E/good business balance.
  • Proven ability to lead and/or be a major team member of task forces, teams, and continual improvement initiatives cross-company.

Nice To Haves

  • Professional certifications in SH&E related fields are considered beneficial and may include CIH, NEBOSH, CSP, CEM, etc.

Responsibilities

  • Support, coach, and guide the site leadership teams to be effective SH&E leaders/coaches in their respective positions.
  • Dotted line responsibility for all facility SH&E staff.
  • Hold sites accountable to ensure all actions to prevent recurrence of incidents are effectively implemented while also ensuring effective injury case management process is fully implemented, well understood, and functioning as desired.
  • Ensure establishment, interpretation and reporting of relevant KPIs, with appropriate leading and corrective actions based on them.
  • Partners with Site Leadership team to develop Site SH&E key priorities, drivers, and activities with key performance indicators to drive Site SH&E performance improvement.
  • Develops SH&E best in class programs, systems, and processes, including training and mentoring to establish clear procedures for SH&E measures and precautions.
  • Work with legal counsel to ensure understanding and to develop corporate interpretation of legislation and regulation.
  • Working with legal and government relations, provided awareness and educational support and interaction to third parties on existing and proposed rules.
  • Support remediation activities internally and by third parties to achieve site cleanups and closures.
  • Provides technical expertise/coaching as needed in all SH&E areas and initiatives in partnership with other functions as applicable.
  • Act as multi-site lead for implementation and adoption of SH&E components of continuous improvement.
  • Partner with site leadership teams and other functions to ensure sites maintain a continuous “audit ready” state of compliance with company SH&E policies and procedures as well as all applicable external regulatory requirements.
  • Drive site accountability for adherence to ISO 45001 and ISO 14001, as well as relevant OSHA, state, and local regulations.
  • This role requires expertise in risk assessment, safety culture promotion, and emergency preparedness to maintain a safe working environment and effectively manage workplace hazards.
  • Leads the effective implementation and utilization of risk assessment and risk prediction processes across our sites to ensure these are effective at identifying and mitigating hazards and are effectively communicated and understood by all affected employees.
