About The Position

The Director, Residence and Student Life is responsible for providing leadership and direction for student housing and the development of student life programs to create engaging living and learning environments for diverse students. The role is responsible for oversight of student housing operations; including, but not limited to: resident lifecycle processing, facility management, emergency response protocols, student conduct reporting, and on-call coverage. The role also manages the team to program student events, intramural activities, student organizations, student employment, and new student orientation services. This position also collaborates on setting department goals and assessment of outcomes, managing and developing assigned staff, and the development of policies and procedures.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Higher Education Administration, Public Administration, Counseling, Business, or equivalent required. Master’s preferred.
  • Minimum three (3) years of experience working with residence life operations or related student services required.
  • Experience working with a diverse residential population required.
  • Working knowledge of laws and regulations which impact residential life programs and students such as FERPA, Title IX, Clery Act etc.
  • Strong leader with a commitment to promoting an atmosphere of civility, diversity, inclusion, collaboration and building productive teams.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills with the ability to make decisions using sound judgment.
  • Excellent communication (oral and written) and interpersonal skills with the ability to listen effectively, respond appropriately and maintain mutual respect.
  • Ability to write reports, correspondence, and prepare presentations.
  • Ability to be flexible and to adapt to change.
  • Ability to maintain a calm and confident demeanor under stressful or emergency situations.
  • Working knowledge and experience of CRM/C S/ERP systems, or other qualifying combination of education and experience.
  • Proficient in Microsoft office products (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).
  • Ability to provide on-call coverage via University cell phone.
  • Ability to work various schedules, including evenings, weekends and being available outside of normal business hours.
  • Ability to respond to campus emergencies urgently.
  • Possess valid driver’s license and ability to be insured by the University’s insurance company.

Responsibilities

  • Supports and promotes the University’s strategic plan, with an emphasis on the residential student experience.
  • Oversees all day-to-day operational activities of the University’s student housing to include, but not limited to: application process, room and roommate assignment, resident move in and move out processes, resident communications, responding to emergency situations, reporting conduct issues, conflict mediation, managing maintenance issues, coordinating on-call coverage, etc.
  • Partners with various departments such as Campus Security, Maintenance, Compliance, and Dean of Students to ensure the health, safety, security, and welfare of students (as it relates to area of responsibility) and is in compliance with all relevant policies, procedures, standards, and laws.
  • Hires, develops, and manages assigned staff. Works with staff to create goals and plans for professional development which align with the University’s goals and mission.
  • Leads the successful planning of student programming on campus including, but not limited to: New Student Orientation, BRUIN Week, Personal Enrichment Program, wellbeing and prevention efforts, and residence life engagement.
  • Guides management of communication platforms such as the campus mobile app, department social media, and event promotion.
  • Oversees student organization participation, status, and assessment of objectives.
  • Manages the student employment program for Federal Work Study and Student Worker positions on campus.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
