About The Position

The Director of Volunteer Services is responsible for leading, optimizing, and expanding strategy and approaches for volunteer management in Alumni Engagement and Annual Giving (AE/AG). The Volunteer Services team supports and amplifies volunteer efforts in this space through the areas of discovery and intake, activation, progression and stewardship. The team and their work also partners closely with areas around the university and within our division that support our constituent volunteers. The work of this team allows us to reduce the barrier to entry for volunteers, create consistent onboarding and in-service experiences, develop robust leadership progression and philanthropy pipelines and provide enhanced tracking and analytics for Vanderbilt. The Director will work collaboratively with a cross-functional team to manage a comprehensive and innovative volunteer capability in support of team, divisional and university priorities This position reports to the Executive Director of Alumni Engagement and manages one (1) team member. The Department of Development and Alumni Relations (DAR) assists Vanderbilt University in securing the resources, both human and financial, that are required to achieve its mission and goals. The Department is responsible for the identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of individuals and organizations whose charitable objectives are consistent with those of Vanderbilt University’s teaching and research programs.

Requirements

  • In addition to being a strong program manager, the Director must possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Further, the Director should have the ability to manage multiple projects effectively and efficiently while utilizing sound judgement in all situations.
  • Demonstrated experience in volunteer management and customer service is required.
  • A Bachelor's Degree, or the equivalent, is required.
  • Five or more years of progressive experience, or the equivalent, is necessary
  • Ability to work independently, take initiative, manage multiple projects simultaneously, meet deadlines, and adapt to evolving priorities.
  • Ability to lead with a team-oriented mindset through strong organizational and communication skills (both oral and written) is required.
  • Ability to exercise exceptional interpersonal skills and judgement in communications with team members, and constituents is a must.
  • Ability to adapt to and use current technologies, as well Salesforce, Volunteer/Project Management tools/systems and Vanderbilt’s donor management system required.
  • Evening and weekend work, as needed; domestic travel may be requested.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in higher education, volunteer management tools and Salesforce is preferred.
  • The Director must be able to perform physical labor and work extended hours as needed.
  • Domestic travel may be required.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborates closely with volunteer managers in AE/AG to ensure volunteer opportunities are executed cohesively and consistently, with a strong focus on the volunteer experience and exceptional customer service through best practices and foundational materials.
  • Supports volunteer managers throughout all phases of the volunteer lifecycle and at various volunteer events; stewards the relationship with volunteer managers through regular meetings, communication and consultative guidance.
  • Drives strategic messaging of and maintains materials related to available volunteer opportunities through web, intake forms, volunteer agreements, menu of opportunities.
  • Manages cyclical volunteer coding processes for AE/AG; serves in a consultative capacity with divisional partners on data inputs.
  • Leads volunteer stewardship efforts in support of AE/AG programs; works closely with AE/AG partners to execute on a milestone recognition program in support of volunteer milestones.
  • Manages volunteer position pathing, providing clarity and transparency around growth opportunities within Vanderbilt’s volunteer landscape.
  • Evaluates and enhances existing programs, continually analyzing current approaches and identifying opportunities to innovate, streamline, or develop new tools and resources to support AE/AG volunteer managers and volunteers.
