About The Position

The Director of Tax is responsible for the preparation, review, and filing of all federal and state tax compliance filings for the hospital system and its related entities. This position reports directly to the VP of Finance. The primary responsibility of this role is the direct preparation and coordination of IRS Forms 990 (including all required schedules), Form 990-T (if applicable), and state charitable filings including CHAR500. The Director will actively gather data, prepare workpapers, draft disclosures, and work closely with external tax advisors to ensure complete and accurate reporting. This role requires strong technical expertise in nonprofit healthcare tax reporting and the ability to manage multi-entity structures within a hospital system.

Requirements

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Finance or Business-related field; Master?s preferred.
  • CPA a plus
  • Experience: 7 years of progressively responsible experience in finance or accounting that includes experiences in budgeting, financial forecasting, financial modeling, planning, organizing and managing multiple financial activities.
  • Direct, hands-on experience preparing Form 990 for hospitals or large nonprofit organizations.
  • Demonstrated experience preparing CHAR500 and multi-state charitable filings.
  • Strong knowledge of nonprofit healthcare tax regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and/or directly review IRS Form 990 for the hospital and all related entities.
  • Prepare detailed supporting workpapers for all 990 schedules
  • Coordinate preparation of Form 990-T and analyze unrelated business income activities.
  • Draft narrative responses and governance disclosures.
  • Ensure consistency between audited financial statements and Form 990 reporting.
  • Prepare and file CHAR500 and other required state charitable registrations.
  • Manage multi-state charitable reporting requirements.
  • Monitor compliance with state filing deadlines and renewal requirements.
  • Analyze physician arrangements and joint ventures for tax reporting implications.
  • Review grant revenue and restricted funding disclosures.
  • Support community benefit reporting and reconciliation to financial statements.
  • Review draft returns prepared by outside firms.
  • Respond to IRS and state tax authority inquiries.
  • Support annual financial statement audit in areas related to tax disclosures.
  • Develop and maintain a tax compliance calendar.
  • Create standardized data collection templates for departments.
  • Establish and maintain internal controls over tax reporting processes.
  • Document procedures for recurring tax filings.
  • Advise the VP of Finance on tax implications of new service lines, affiliations, acquisitions, and grant-funded programs.
  • Support board-level reporting related to tax compliance and governance matters.
  • Stay current on changes in nonprofit healthcare tax law and reporting requirements.
