About The Position

The Director of Staff Development (DSD) is responsible for planning and implementing facility orientation, job skills training, in-service education, and a Certification Training Program (if applicable) for nursing assistants as required by regulations. This role involves working with the Director of Nursing (DON) and Administrator to ensure the highest degree of quality care is maintained at all times. The DSD also provides direct resident/patient care. Key responsibilities include coordinating and participating in staff recruitment and hiring, processing employment-related documentation, and coordinating employee benefit programs. The DSD must be able to relate positively and favorably to residents and families, work cooperatively with other employees, and maintain a professional appearance. The role also involves planning, conducting, and documenting required Fire/Internal Disaster and External Mass Casualty Drills, identifying education needs from various sources, organizing and maintaining records of in-service education programs, making rounds to observe patient care, coordinating infection control surveillance, supervising staff, completing Department of Health forms, and participating in facility surveys. The DSD is expected to generate enthusiasm and foster a cooperative relationship with all employees, while maintaining employee/resident/patient confidentiality.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited School of Nursing.
  • Possession of a valid license from the state to practice nursing as a Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Vocational/Practical Nurse (LVN or LPN).
  • One (1) year of experience providing direct patient care in a long-term care facility.
  • One (1) year of experience planning, implementing, and evaluating education programs in nursing.
  • Ability to read technical procedures.
  • Ability to read and comprehend policy and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from managers and employees.
  • Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
  • Ability to solve practical problems.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Current Registered Nursing License (RN) or LVN/LPN License.
  • Current CPR certification.
  • Must maintain all required continuing education/licensing.
  • Must remain in good standing with the State Board of Nursing at all times.

Nice To Haves

  • BSN preferred.
  • Two (2) or more years of experience preferred, preferably in a long-term care facility.
  • Knowledge and experience with PCC preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Utilize information from Licensing and Certification Surveys, Employee Evaluations, Facility Rounds, and recommendations from the Administrator and department heads to identify education needs.
  • Organize in-service education programs for staff including assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of education provided.
  • Prepare an annual in-service schedule.
  • Prepare and post a monthly in-service calendar.
  • Maintain records of in-services as required by regulations.
  • Plan and conduct meaningful in-service education programs according to requirements for nursing personnel and all facility staff to assure competency in new skills, and as directed by the Administrator.
  • Make rounds and observe delivery of patient care.
  • Coordinate infection control surveillance program.
  • Supervise staff, including taking or assisting with appropriate disciplinary measures.
  • Complete all forms required by the Department of Health in relation to the in-service and education programs.
  • Participate in facility surveys (inspections) made by authorized government agencies as requested by the Administrator or Director of Nursing.
  • Provide direct resident/patient care.
  • Maintain employee/resident/patient confidentiality at all times.
  • Assist with the overall supervision and management of the staff.
