About The Position

Élan Academy is a PK4-8th grade classical charter school dedicated to providing a high-quality education that empowers scholars to excel academically and develop strong character. We believe in fostering a supportive, inclusive environment where all students, including those with diverse learning needs, receive the resources and instruction necessary to thrive. The Director of Special Education is responsible for leading and overseeing all special education services, ensuring compliance with federal and state regulations, and supporting scholars with exceptionalities. This leader will work closely with teachers, families, and support staff to create an inclusive learning environment that meets the needs of all students.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Special Education, Educational Leadership, or a related field (preferred).
  • Valid Louisiana special education certification (or ability to obtain certification).
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in special education, including leadership roles.
  • Strong knowledge of federal and state special education laws and best practices.
  • Experience managing IEP/504 processes, compliance, and student supports.
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee all aspects of the special education program, ensuring full compliance with IDEA, Section 504, and state regulations.
  • Develop and implement policies, procedures, and best practices for special education services.
  • Monitor and maintain accurate records of IEPs, 504 plans, evaluations, and related documentation.
  • Lead and prepare for audits, reviews, and reporting related to special education.
  • Ensure students with disabilities receive appropriate RTI interventions, accommodations, and services to support their academic, behavior, and social-emotional growth.
  • Work with teachers and interventionists to implement differentiated instruction and inclusive practices.
  • Collaborate with external service providers (e.g., speech therapists, occupational therapists, psychologists) to meet student needs.
  • Provide direct support for complex cases, including disciplinary actions, behavior plans, and dispute resolution.
  • Train and support general education teachers, special education teachers, gifted/talented teachers and paraprofessionals in best practices for serving students with disabilities.
  • Conduct professional development on topics such as IEP implementation, differentiated instruction, behavior management, and compliance.
  • Serve as a resource for school leaders, offering guidance on special education-related decisions.
  • Ensure high-quality academic instruction is taking place with EL scholars, special education scholars, and gifted & talented scholars.
  • Partner with families to ensure clear communication and collaboration regarding student needs and progress.
  • Provide workshops and resources to help families navigate special education services.
  • Foster a culture of inclusion and advocacy for students with disabilities.
  • Lead family special education support group.
  • Analyze student performance data to evaluate the effectiveness of special education programs and interventions.
  • Collaborate with school leadership to align special education services with overall academic goals.
  • Manage special education funding and resources efficiently.
