About The Position

The Director of Social Services will provide oversight and supervision for all social service programs and staff, including Emergency Shelter programs, Emergency Assistance programs, food pantry, meal program, etc.

Requirements

  • Must have a clear understanding of the ministry and vision of the La Crosse Corps
  • Must complete and stay current with The Salvation Army’s Safe From Harm training
  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • Social Work certification from the State of Wisconsin is preferred.
  • Valid Wisconsin Drivers’ License with clearance to drive from The Salvation Army’s insurance carrier
  • Minimum four years’ experience in the field of Social Services or related role

Responsibilities

  • Represent The Salvation Army by carrying out the mission in all aspects of our services
  • Oversee all social service programs to include, but not limited to, shelter management and intake, casework services, emergency client assistance, food pantry, and employment program
  • Plans, coordinates, instructs, supervises, monitors and evaluates the work performance of the Social Services staff which includes the case workers manager, shelter manager and intake staff, food service and food pantry staff
  • Recruits, screens, interviews and recommends for hire persons for Social Service department positions. Makes recommendations to the Corps Officer for promotions and terminations
  • Maintain positive relationships with community agencies and representatives
  • Ability to write grants and review them for approval
  • Manage and oversee all currently employed Interns
  • Directs the maintenance of adequate client files by standardizing, revising and initiating necessary tracking documents. Maintains the documentation and ongoing reports needed for government licensing, funding and other sources of assistance.  Understands and follows The Salvation Army file retention policy
  • Ensures compliance with Salvation Army Social Services policies and procedures in all programs, including confidentiality and ethics. Understands and follows The Salvation Army National standards for social service programs
  • Coordinate with Development Director in writing and developing grants
  • Coordinate with Business Manager in developing and maintaining program budgets and other fiscal controls. Provide input regarding budgets and monitor expenditures
  • Provide on-going direction and training to managers through regular in-house and external programs
  • Conduct regular staff meetings for the Social Services staff in which necessary social service matters can be discussed, and instruction and training provided
  • Prepares and submits monthly, quarterly and bi-annual reports to all necessary funders. Gathers and analyzes monthly statistics to determine The Salvation Army’s Social Service effectiveness and its future directions
  • Research and obtain knowledge of all community agency programs and clientele referral resources available
  • Be available to speak on behalf of The Salvation Army at community groups and organizations
  • Serve as a member of The Salvation Army of La Crosse Program Committee
  • Oversee seasonal assistance programs
  • Maintain open communication with Corps Officers and coordinate services with ongoing Corps programming
  • Assist with recruitment, assignment and scheduling of volunteers and/or student interns and social services programs
  • Maintain a positive work atmosphere by acting and communicating in a manner that fosters good relationships with clients, co-workers, and supervisors. This includes, but is not limited to, such actions as: resolution of conflicts in a professional manner; courteous treatment of staff, visitors and clients; respect of other’s property and person; and professional and appropriate communication to and about clients, co-workers and supervisors
  • Other duties as appropriate and assigned for this position
