About The Position

This position reports to the Chief Nursing Officer. The Director of Pharmacy Services plans, organizes, controls and supervises activities in hospital policies, standards of practice of the profession, and State and Federal laws. The role involves recommending innovations in the practice and function of the hospital pharmacy to Administration and carrying out mutually agreed upon programs. Key aspects include supervising all pharmacy staff, maintaining and disseminating drug information through in-service education, consultation with patients, hospital staff, and medical staff. The Director actively assists staff pharmacists in their duties, provides professional and technical guidance, and exercises professional judgment in imparting therapeutic and drug information. The position requires competence in treating adult, pediatric, geriatric, and adolescent patients.

Requirements

  • B.S. or PharmD from an ACPE-accredited School of Pharmacy.
  • Current Pharmacist license in good standing with the appropriate State Board of Pharmacy.
  • Experience using computer applications including word processing, spreadsheets, and pharmacy information systems.
  • Thorough knowledge of state and federal laws and regulations governing pharmacy services.
  • Proficient in the use and application of new medications and technology.
  • Leadership, administrative, human resource, and managerial skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively participate on interdisciplinary teams and committees.
  • Business acumen including profit/loss understanding, contract negotiations, and GPO function.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of pathophysiology, interpretation of diagnostic criteria, pharmacokinetics and pharmacotherapeutics.
  • Problem solving and analytical thinking ability.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises all pharmacy staff.
  • Supervises the maintenance and dissemination of drug information through in-service education of hospital personnel, consultation with patients, hospital staff, and medical staff.
  • Actively assists staff pharmacists in the discharge of routing duties as necessary.
  • Directs the activities of and provides professional and technical guidance to pharmacy personnel.
  • Exercises professional judgment in imparting therapeutic and drug information to patients and health professionals.
  • Is competent in the range of treatment needed by the following patients as appropriate to the ages served by the hospital: Adult, Pediatric, Geriatric, Adolescent.
  • Consistently demonstrates active listening skills in all communications with customers/suppliers.
  • Responds to the initial requests, complaints, or concerns of customers/suppliers within 24 hours and follows up in a timely manner with a resolution.
  • Demonstrates clear, concise, constructive communication both verbally and in writing.
  • Maintains confidentiality regarding issues related to patient care and hospital operations.
  • Serves as a positive role model by displaying cooperative professional behavior in interacting with others.
  • Incorporates knowledge of various cultural and spiritual beliefs when dealing with Customers.
  • Ensures respect for patient rights and promotes patient advocacy.
  • Communicates the Hospital mission to department employees and integrates with departmental operations.
  • Provides leadership to new program development, implementation and evaluation.
  • Acts as a consultant in areas of expertise.
  • Anticipates the needs and issues of customers/suppliers in order to ensure effective departmental operations and/or meet needs.
  • Promotes teamwork among staff, peers, physicians, and others.
  • Promotes multi-disciplinary teamwork in order to meet the organization’s goals and objectives.
  • Responsible for department planning goals, and objectives that are consistent with the Hospital.
  • Provides leadership to the department through effective organization, direction of activities, and appropriate delegation of functions.
  • Maintains appropriate controls of department functions to ensure smooth, effective operations.
  • Continuously evaluates the quality of services and/or products provided to the department’s customers.
  • Ensures that department is in compliance with all applicable safety and security practices, infection control policies and procedures, and Federal and State regulations.

  • Ensures that department maintains the confidentiality of patient information and confidentiality of al records as they pertain to the patient.
  • Responsible for development and implementation of department specific policy and procedures.

  • Holds department employees consistently accountable to established job performance standards, functions, and responsibilities.
  • Responsible for the effective recruitment, selection, orientation, promotion, evaluation, retention and termination of department employees.
  • Determines the competence of department employees.
  • Routinely assesses departmental education needs and provides the appropriate learning experiences, i.e., on the job training, workshop, in-service, etc.
  • Actively participates in hospital committees, task forces, projects and provides leadership as assigned.
  • Represents hospital through active participation outside activities and organizations.
  • Ensures professional self-development through continuing education and assuming additional responsibilities/projects that extend beyond the specific focus of one’s own department.
  • Participates in at least one professional organization related to professional field.
  • Reviews, evaluates and recommends modifications to annual operating budget(s) to provide adequate space and resources needed by the department.
  • Participates in the selection of sources for needed services not provided by the department/service or the organization.
  • Reviews monthly operating budgets and submits variance reports within scheduled time frame.
  • Ensures that department operates within established revenue and expense budget parameters.
  • Develops and implements cost reduction strategies to maintain costs within budget and realize cost reduction opportunities.
  • Prepares and justifies annual Capital Equipment and Construction Budges within defined budget time lines.
  • Maintains departmental charge system for services rendered.
  • Ensures that the system is comprehensive, accurate and timely.
  • Establishes, controls and actively monitors inventory levels.
  • Adjusts inventory levels based on changing needs of the hospital.
  • Inventory turns are appropriate for department. Goal – 12 inventory turns per year.
  • Recommends new services/modifications to existing services to meet patient needs and provide additional sources of revenue.
  • Maintains knowledge of state and federal pharmacy and applicable health care regulations and professional standards.
  • Adheres to requirements of state and federal pharmacy laws and regulations in the performance of duties.
  • Understands their responsibility under the HIPAA Privacy and Security Rules as they relate to job description.
  • Adheres to Company Code of Conduct.
  • Other related duties as assigned.
