About The Position

We are hiring a Director of People Services who will bring a passion for providing our faculty, physician leaders, operational leaders, and employees with HR service excellence. The Biological Sciences Division (BSD) is the largest academic unit of the University of Chicago. Established in 1930, the BSD is comprised of faculty, staff, and administrative leaders across clinical and basic science units. In this unique academic community, the BSD delivers undergraduate, graduate, medical, and postgraduate education in the biological sciences as well as providing outstanding patient care and world-renowned research in the life sciences. Our team includes 135 faculty within the 10 basic science departments, over 800 faculty across 13 clinical departments, and 2400 staff members supporting faculty and researchers across the BSD departments and Pritzker School of Medicine. Our faculty researchers and faculty physicians work in collaboration with the University of Chicago Medical Center (UCMC) to provide world renown patient care and to address the world's most pressing medical challenges. The Biological Sciences Division is located on the beautiful Hyde Park campus of the University of Chicago, 20 minutes south of downtown Chicago. The Director of People Services provides strategic leadership on HR policies and practices for staff across multiple BSD departments ensuring alignment with Divisional and University HR policies and goals. As a strategic thought partner and subject matter expert, the Director of People Services collaborates with unit and divisional leadership on matters of organizational design, performance management, talent acquisition, employee and labor relations, learning and development, and compensation administration. The Director of People Services leads a team of HR professionals who are responsible for ensuring excellence in HR services to their respective client group. The Director of People Services reports to the Divisional Executive Director of Human Resources for the Biological Sciences Division.

Requirements

  • Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.
  • Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through 7+ years of work experience in a related job discipline.

  • Proficiency with continuous improvement practices and strong project management skills, including the ability to assess risk, manage and organize work, allocate budget, and people resources, adapt to unfolding circumstances, and deliver on-time results.

Responsibilities

  • Provides strategic human resources leadership on policies and practices to multiple BSD clinical departments and shared resources with divergent business needs.
  • Provides consultation and advice to clients on HR matters related to strategic workforce planning, employee relations, organizational development, leadership coaching, and inter-department HR communications.
  • Manages annual goal setting and performance feedback process for designated departments.
  • Administers annual equity review for all positions as part of pre-budget planning process.
  • Establish standard operating procedures and ongoing training and documentation for HR processes and activities within the leader's respective client groups. Ensure system and people processes are well documented, regularly updated, and end user trained.
  • Leads and develops professional human resources staff responsible for designing, implementing, and monitoring a variety of human resource programs. Ensure strong talent capabilities across HR centers of excellence.
  • Provides leadership to operations leaders and HR professionals on matters related to grievances, complaints, or legal issues, and works with the appropriate Divisional and University offices to coordinate resolutions.
  • Identify strategic opportunities for process and compliance improvement, automation, and reduction of manual HR processes ensuring continuous review and standardization of human resources processes within the respective client groups and across the BSD.
  • Leverages Workday solutions for better electronic data captures (patient contact, space planning, Magnet data).
  • Stays abreast of federal, state and local employment laws and regulations and may advise unit management and professional staff in matters relating.
  • May represent the unit in grievances, complaints, or legal issues, and works with the appropriate University offices to coordinate resolutions.
  • Performs other related work as needed.
