About The Position

The primary function of this position is to develop, organize and direct all aspects of nursing services and related ancillary activities in compliance with all federal, state and local guidelines, standards and regulations that govern the facility, and, as directed by the Administrator so as to ensure that each resident receives quality/individualized care and services consistent with their medical psychosocial and spiritual needs and wishes.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an approved school of nursing and possess a current license as a Registered Nurse, valid in the state in which practicing.
  • Minimum of three years experience in a supervisory capacity in a hospital or health care facility including geriatric and/or psychiatric nursing.
  • Certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
  • Must possess, as a minimum, a nursing degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Must be able to speak and understand the English language in an understandable manner in order to carry out essential functions of job.
  • Must possess ability to function independently, have flexibility and the ability to work effectively with residents, co-workers and others.
  • Must possess effective communication and interpersonal skills, particularly in dealing with elderly and ill populations, health care providers and community services.
  • Must possess ability to maintain confidentiality in regard to resident information and records.
  • Must possess general knowledge of care and procedures used to assist residents in daily care and comfort, utilizing all safety procedures.
  • Must possess knowledge of and the ability to use proper body mechanics to meet physical job demands.
  • Must possess ability to interact effectively with residents and their families and assist in providing emotion and social support.
  • Must possess knowledge of and the ability to properly record, chart and document necessary information as required by established policies/procedures.
  • Must possess knowledge of federal, state, county and nursing home policies and procedures as they relate to activity personnel and care of residents.
  • Must possess knowledge of infection control and universal precautions and the ability to apply same to essential job duties.
  • Must possess excellent organizational skills and the ability to accomplish several duties and meet schedule of various departments regarding resident care.
  • Must possess a good understanding of the reimbursement systems and the financial and budgeting structure of a Nursing Home and/or Assisted Living facility.

Responsibilities

  • Develops and establishes policies and procedures pertaining to all aspects of nursing service objectives. Develops and establishes facility policies and procedures under the direction of the facility’s Medical Director.
  • Monitors resident care outcomes and staff performance of duties to ensure policies and procedures are executed according to facility policies.
  • Reviews, revises, and implements new policies and procedures, as needed, to meet regulatory requirements and resident care needs.
  • Reviews compliance with established policies and procedures by all nursing personnel and other related ancillary activitie
  • Effectively communicates all relevant policies and procedures to all applicable staff
  • Monitors and supervises all nursing department staff for compliance with all applicable job responsibilities and expectations. Performs performance evaluations of direct reports and ensures performance evaluations and competency assessments completed according to facility policy
  • Reviews the competency of all nursing personnel. Ensures competency assessments are completed according to facility policy
  • Conducts scheduled department meetings for all levels of nursing staff on all shifts on a routine and periodic basis.
  • Ensures the review, hiring, training, and orienting of new nursing personnel in accordance with facility policies and procedures and updates processes and programs as needed to meet regulatory requirements, resident care needs, and /or employee training needs. Initiates various related personnel functions such as employee evaluations, promotions, disciplinary actions, etc, as necessitated by facility policy and procedures and regulatory requirements.
  • Assures adequate staffing is maintained so as to meet the needs of each resident on a continuum. Reviews staffing patterns on a routine basis and monitors staff to resident ratios, acuity/care needs of residents, and resident outcomes in establishing staffing patterns.
  • Actively participates in establishing annual budget for nursing department. Maintains departmental budgets in compliance with established parameters. Investigates and communicates with Management team if/when variances occur.
  • Assesses supply and equipment needs and assures an adequate inventory is maintained so as to meet the needs of the residents on a continuum.
  • Assists subordinate positions in rendering resident care and services as required And/or needed.
  • Assures ancillary services such as dietary, activities, rehabilitation, etc., are provided conducive to meeting the medical and psychosocial needs of the residents on a continuum.
  • Serves as Acting Administrator in the absences of the Administrator.
  • Actively participates in overall facility management and is thus cooperative with co-workers and peers. Establishes effective labor and management team relationships.
  • Participates on the Quality Assurance committee and other sub-committees as required and/or directed.
  • Prepares various reports and statistical analysis as directed. Submits reports to regulatory agencies, Administrator, and Affinity management team, as required and directed
  • Keeps apprised of new information in the field by attending seminars, affiliation meetings, reading related literature or as directed by the Administrator.
  • Assures nursing personnel receive appropriate in-servicing and education so as to meet regulatory and staff needs. Provides in-service and education, as needed.
  • Coordinates inspections and survey process completed by outside regulatory and governmental agencies. Provides documents as requested. Establishes plans of correction, as warranted, and ensures successful implementation of plans of correction when indicated.
  • Participates in resident and family meetings, care plan meetings, etc., as needed.
  • Assures that general responsibilities of nursing administration are completed according to best practice standards, facility policies and procedures, and Management direction. This includes but not limited to: incident and accident reporting and investigation, infection control tracking and trending, medication error reporting and investigation, pharmacological reconciliation processes, pressure ulcer incidence and prevalence tracking, and other resident care outcomes, as appropriate.
