About The Position

The Director, Laboratory Services is responsible for the strategic leadership, development, and management of histology and clinical laboratory operations, as well as indirect responsibilities for regional logistics and phlebotomy. This role ensures the successful execution of day-to-day operations, technical excellence, personnel management, and quality assurance across all disciplines. The Director collaborates with Finance, IT, HR, Business Development and other departments to drive operational efficiencies, regulatory compliance, and customer satisfaction, while supporting the organization's mission and growth.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Histology, or related field.
  • At least five years of management experience in laboratory settings required.
  • At least six years of prior laboratory experience, including histology methods and clinical laboratory operations.
  • Proven track record in establishing and maintaining positive and productive relationships with physicians, employees, and clients.
  • Experience with regulatory compliance, quality assurance, and process improvement.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.

Nice To Haves

  • National certification by the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) as Clinical Laboratory Specialist and/or Histotechnologist (HT) preferred.
  • Maintains appropriate continuing education for certification/licensure.

Responsibilities

  • Support the organization's mission, vision, goals, and management decisions.
  • Oversee and continuously evaluate both histology and clinical laboratory operations and workflows, implementing improvements as needed.
  • Coordinate with the Vice President of Logistics to ensure effective and efficient logistics regional operations.
  • Coordinate with the Vice President of Patient Services to ensure effective and efficient regional phlebotomy services.
  • Serve as the laboratory director for point of care testing sites in the region.
  • Develop and execute business and technical operations plans for clinical and anatomic pathology, aligned with the company's strategic objectives and resource allocation.
  • Lead and direct managerial staff, making decisions, solving problems, developing procedures, and conducting meetings.
  • Oversee employee hiring, performance management, and development, including job descriptions, performance expectations, and ongoing education.
  • Ensure compliance with all licensing, regulatory, and accreditation requirements (e.g., CLIA, CAP, state regulations), and uphold company policies and integrity.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor departmental quality assurance programs and performance metrics.
  • Collaborate with finance to develop and manage budgets, control costs, and improve operational expense efficiencies.
  • Achieve budget profitability objectives through effective resource utilization and market share growth.
  • Foster and maintain positive relationships with customers, physicians, colleagues, and suppliers to ensure satisfaction and integration of business processes.
  • Work strategically with Laboratory Medical Directors, Sales, and Marketing to accommodate new clients and expand services.
  • Oversee ordering and inventory of supplies for all departments.
  • Coordinate the development and implementation of departmental policies and procedures.
  • Ensure a safe, ethical, and non-discriminatory work environment, addressing employee relations and conflict resolution as needed.
  • Exercise all laboratory safety precautions and adhere to best security practices and regulatory guidelines to protect confidential and sensitive data.
  • Collaborate with IT to implement and maintain laboratory information systems.
  • Perform all job responsibilities in alignment with industry best practices and regulatory guidelines.
