Job ScopeThe Director of Compensation is responsible for setting and executing Sun Auto’s compensation strategy across a large, multi‑state retail and automotive services organization. This role designs, governs, and continuously evolves base pay, short‑ and long‑term incentive programs and compensation frameworks that drive performance, support growth, and reinforce a pay‑for‑performance culture. Reporting to the VP of Total Rewards, the Director of Compensation leads a small but high‑impact team and serves as a trusted advisor to the business. This role requires deep expertise in retail or automotive compensation models, including complex incentive design for field, corporate, and leadership populations.

Requirements

  • 12+ years of progressive compensation experience, including 5 years in a leadership capacity.
  • Deep experience in designing and managing complex incentive plans, particularly in retail, automotive, or multi‑unit operating environments.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate business strategy into effective compensation and incentive programs.
  • Strong understanding of compensation regulations and compliance requirements across multiple states.
  • Proven people leader with experience managing a lean, high‑performing team.
  • Highly analytical with the ability to synthesize large data sets into clear, actionable recommendations.
  • Advanced Excel skills; strong comfort partnering with Finance and Operations.
  • Executive‑level communication skills with the ability to influence without authority.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design, implementation and ongoing refinement of complex incentive programs including bonuses, commissions, and performance-based pay plans that drive behaviors aligned to operational, financial and customer outcomes.
  • Develop and evolve the enterprise compensation strategy ensuring alignment with business objectives, operating models and growth plans.
  • Support executive and senior leadership compensation programs including analysis, design input, and governance reviews (Compensation Committee).
  • Provide oversight of salary structures, pay ranges, and market pricing to ensure internal equity and external competitiveness.
  • Lead the annual compensation cycle, merit increases, bonus planning, executive leadership compensation reviews.
  • Demonstrate strong collaborative skills with all levels of the organization including Executive Leaders, HR, Finance, Operations, HRIS, IT and the M&A teams.
  • Develop clear compensation communication tools, and guidance to support leaders' understanding, adoption, and consistent execution of programs.
  • Lead compensation activities including due-diligence, integration planning, and day-one readiness for mergers and acquisitions.
  • Lead, develop, coach, and scale a small compensation team setting clear expectations, priorities and high standards of execution with speed, accuracy and strong internal customer service.
  • Ensure proactive compliance with wage and hour laws, FLSA, Minimum wage updates, and state and local regulations.
