Position Summary The Director of Business Development is responsible for leading the strategic growth of the organization by identifying, cultivating, and managing new business opportunities within the substance use disorder (SUD) and behavioral health sectors. This role is key in expanding access to care by forming partnerships with payers, referral sources, healthcare systems, and community organizations. The ideal candidate is experienced in behavioral health services, knowledgeable about payer relationships, and skilled in strategic planning and relationship building.

Requirements

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Public Health, Healthcare Management, or related field required.
  • Experience: Minimum of 7 years of progressive experience in business development, strategic partnerships, or healthcare network development, with at least 3 years in the behavioral health or SUD treatment industry.
  • Industry Knowledge: In-depth knowledge of behavioral health and SUD treatment models (residential, outpatient, MAT, detox), licensing/accreditation standards (e.g., CARF, Joint Commission), and payer systems (managed care, Medicaid, Medicare, commercial).
  • Skills: Strong interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills. Proven track record of building and maintaining referral and payer relationships. High proficiency in data-driven decision-making and performance analytics. Strong negotiation skills and experience handling contracts. Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment.
  • Travel: Willingness and ability to travel regionally and nationally as needed (estimated 25-50%).

Nice To Haves

  • Certified Marketing Professional (CMP), Certified Behavioral Health Case Manager (CBHCM), or equivalent industry certifications a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Strategic Growth Planning: Design, implement, and refine a comprehensive business development strategy aimed at expanding access to and utilization of SUD and behavioral health services across target markets.
  • Referral Network Development: Identify, cultivate, and maintain high-value referral relationships with hospitals, primary care providers, mental health professionals, employee assistance programs (EAPs), legal systems, and community-based organizations.
  • Payer & Contracting Strategy: Establish and nurture strategic relationships with managed care organizations, Medicaid and Medicare payers, and commercial insurance networks. Lead negotiations and oversee contract implementation to ensure alignment with organizational goals and compliance standards.
  • Market Intelligence & Opportunity Analysis: Monitor and analyze national, state, and local trends in behavioral health policy, funding, and treatment delivery. Identify emerging opportunities for program expansion or new service line development.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with internal teams including admissions, clinical leadership, marketing, compliance, and finance to align outreach efforts, streamline processes, and maintain consistent and compliant messaging across all business development initiatives.
  • Outreach & Brand Representation: Represent the organization at conferences, roundtables, and community events. Deliver presentations, webinars, and educational sessions to promote services and build thought leadership in the SUD treatment space.
  • Performance Metrics & ROI Tracking: Develop and manage KPIs to measure business development performance, referral pipeline activity, payer growth, and overall return on investment for outreach initiatives.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Build and maintain trusted relationships with community stakeholders, advocacy groups, public health departments, and other external partners to enhance the organization’s role in the behavioral health ecosystem.
  • Ethics & Compliance: Operate with the highest standards of integrity, professionalism, and cultural competence. Ensure all activities align with HIPAA, state/federal regulations, and ethical best practices in behavioral healthcare.
