About The Position

A fast-growing commercial general contractor in Florida is seeking a Director of Business Development to drive strategic growth and expand its presence across Southwest Florida and beyond. This organization operates primarily in a negotiated/design-build environment , partnering with developers and owners early in the conceptual phase—often before plans are fully developed. They are entering a significant growth phase and looking for a relationship-driven leader to help elevate brand recognition, build pipeline, and secure negotiated opportunities. This is a high-impact role reporting directly to executive leadership. Position Overview The Director of Business Development will be responsible for identifying and cultivating relationships with developers, architects, brokers, engineers, and property owners throughout Florida. The primary objective is to generate qualified opportunities and secure negotiated/design-build work in multifamily, hospitality, retail, office, and mixed-use sectors. This role is heavily relationship-driven. The ideal candidate excels at opening doors, setting meetings, and positioning a contractor as a trusted preconstruction partner.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of business development experience in commercial construction
  • Strong understanding of negotiated/design-build delivery
  • Existing relationships within Florida’s development and real estate community preferred
  • Experience in multifamily, hospitality, or mixed-use markets highly desirable
  • Entrepreneurial mindset with strong presentation skills
  • Comfortable engaging C-level developers and institutional owners
  • Persistent, proactive, and relationship-driven

  • Construction expertise is beneficial but not required—the focus is on relationship-building and getting the company “to the table.”

Responsibilities

  • Relationship Development Build and maintain relationships with developers, architects, brokers, and property owners
  • Increase brand visibility across Southwest Florida (Tampa South focus)
  • Position the firm as a preferred negotiated/design-build partner
  • Attend industry events and actively network within the development community
  • Pipeline Development Develop and maintain a qualified annual pipeline of $150M+
  • Identify early-stage projects in conceptual and design phases
  • Secure preconstruction and budgeting opportunities
  • Track opportunities through CRM and forecasting tools
  • Pursuit Strategy Support RFQ/RFP pursuits and interview presentations
  • Coordinate with preconstruction and operations teams
  • Assist with contract negotiations
  • Help improve win ratios (target 20–30%)
  • Strategic Growth Support expansion into new markets and sectors
  • Contribute to brand positioning initiatives
  • Help transition business development responsibilities off executive leadership
