The starting pay range for this position is $119,232.20-$149,040.25/annual, and final pay rate will be determined based on experience, education, skills, and internal equity factors. This individual will build and maintain relationships with policymakers, regulators, industry trade associations, and community groups. The Director of Advocacy & Policy will help develop tactical plans to promote public policy that advances Canvas’ priorities.

Requirements

  • Strong understanding of legislative and regulatory processes at the state and federal levels.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including persuasive writing and public speaking.
  • Excellent relationship building skills with the ability to find common ground and build consensus among diverse stakeholders.
  • High ethical standards and a commitment to compliance in all advocacy and political activities.
  • Ability to effectively interact with all levels of leadership, as well as other departments and partners, in a collaborative environment.
  • Proficient in MS Office (Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
  • Ability to maintain confidences.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Colorado drivers’ license and provide proof of insurance.
  • Bachelor’s degree in political science, public administration, business, or a related field.
  • At least five years of experience working in government relations, public affairs, or advocacy, preferably within the financial services or credit union industry.

Responsibilities

  • Builds and maintains trusted relationships with key state and federal legislators, staff, regulators, community leaders, and other influencers.
  • Collaborates closely with key advocacy partners, including the GoWest Credit Union Association, America’s Credit Unions, the Defense Council of Credit Unions, the National Association of State Credit Union Supervisors, the Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce, the Colorado Chamber of Commerce, and others.
  • Communicates with advocacy leaders at other credit unions, both locally and nationally, to discuss issues confronting credit unions and their members; leverages insights from those discussions in formulating advocacy strategies that serve Canvas and the broader credit union movement.
  • Advocates clearly and effectively for the credit union’s interests in a wide variety of settings (e.g., individual meetings, group events, fundraisers, committees, etc.).
  • Identifies, researches, and monitors relevant state and federal legislative and regulatory issues. Drafts comment letters as needed.
  • Gathers data and insights to make recommendations concerning the best allocation of Canvas’ advocacy resources, including contract lobbyists and corporate PAC contributions.
  • Manages and oversees corporate PAC contributions and fundraising activities in compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
  • Coordinates opportunities for Canvas team members to engage in credit union advocacy and stay apprised of legislative and regulatory developments.
  • Complies with Bank Secrecy Act (BSA) and other compliance requests and requirements.
  • Follows all safety and security guidelines to properly safeguard member and organization assets.
  • Required to maintain confidential information and can correctly disseminate confidential information to appropriate parties.
  • Embraces ongoing education and learns/applies new skills and software applications.
  • Regular attendance and punctuality are essential functions of the job.
  • Performs other job duties as assigned.
