With 2 direct reports supporting your leadership, you'll oversee comprehensive operations that directly impact every patient, visitor, and team member who walks through our doors. Your department serves as a critical partner to clinical teams, infection prevention, and facility operations—ensuring regulatory compliance while maintaining the highest standards of cleanliness and safety. You'll have the opportunity to shape departmental culture, implement innovative cleaning technologies, and build strong collaborative relationships with department leaders, vendors, administration, and regulatory agencies. This position offers significant autonomy in budgeting, contract negotiations for cleaning supplies, equipment, and linen services, giving you real influence over operational efficiency and cost management. As Director Environmental Services, you'll enjoy a predictable 8:00 to 5:00 onsite work schedule with excellent work-life balance—weekends and holidays are not typically required unless urgent situations arise. Your day-to-day will include meaningful rounding to connect with your team, regular strategic meetings, and hands-on leadership that keeps you engaged with operations while allowing time for big-picture planning. You'll bring your creativity and passion to solve complex challenges, from ensuring proper chemical handling and waste disposal protocols to negotiating high-value contracts that impact the entire medical center. Your hospital EVS experience will be valued and built upon as you implement best practices and drive continuous improvement. POSITION SUMMARY This position is responsible for the effective direction, management, and operation of all functions of the Environmental Services to maintain a clean and safe medical center environment. May also have accountability and oversight for other departments, including but not limited to, Linen and/or Transport Services for the facility. Ensures the proper guidelines and protocols governing the use of chemicals and the disposal of waste products are enforced. Provides a key role in negotiation of cleaning supply and equipment contracts, and linen contract.

Requirements

  • Must possess a general knowledge of business and/or healthcare as normally obtained through the completion of a bachelor’s degree in business, healthcare administration or related field.
  • This position requires a minimum of 4 to 5 years leadership experience.
  • Must possess current knowledge of budgeting, negotiating, and regulatory requirements.
  • Requires a comprehensive working knowledge of environmental services functions, including chemicals, tools, and equipment used for carpet and hard floor care.
  • Must demonstrate effective leadership, organization, communication and human relation skills to interact successfully with all levels of staff and outside contacts/vendors, including administration, physicians, vendors and regulatory agencies.
  • Must possess skills in the areas of computer operation, planning, directing, communication, and statistical analysis.

Responsibilities

  • Directs personnel actions including recruiting, new hire actions, interviewing and selection of new staff, salary determinations, training, and personnel evaluations. This position is also accountable for the development and oversight of department goals and objectives in accordance with company/facility standards.
  • Establishes priorities for the goals, objectives and strategies for the Environmental Services Department and other departments, as applicable. Studies systems and processes to understand and make improvements. Seeks to benchmark outside the organization to find better approaches. Makes predictions of volume trends, staffing and technology needs as well as supply costs.
  • Defines roles, responsibilities, key relationships and accountability for all department positions. Develops supervisors, leads, and staff through assessing performance and promoting education and training. Accountable for the effectiveness/efficiency of work and employee scheduling systems.
  • Assures the department is effectively and efficiently controlling budgeted manpower, materials, equipment, money and time. Ensures compliance with regulatory requirements. Promotes effective policies and procedures. Reports performance monitoring for expected time periods.
  • Promotes win-win interpersonal relationships with supervisors, administration, system leadership, employees, colleagues, physicians, patients and customers. Promotes win-win negotiations with suppliers.
  • Leads teams and contributes to efforts to improve processes and customer satisfaction, reduce waste and promote system integration resulting in best value care.
  • May be accountable for the oversight of other departments and staff, including but not limited to, Linen and/or Transport Services for the facility.
  • Department responsibility over facility/campus buildings. Involved in assisting with system-wide initiatives and activities. Internal customers are patients, staff, executives, and physicians. Phone contact with a variety of outside customers.
