About The Position

Nautilus Insurance is seeking a Claims Director to join their team! This is a new position due to growth and a great opportunity to take your claims managment to the next level. This role will be located in our Scottsdale AZ headquarters, however will will consider a highly qualified candidate. The Claims Director provides vision, oversight, direction, and management for the assigned claims units (property, casualty, or both). This role implements and monitors severity, complexity management, and quality assurance standards and procedures. The Director works collaboratively with claims leadership to ensure effective and efficient claims services, supports enterprise-wide business objectives, and contributes to the ongoing development of claims staff. The Director has authority above the Claims Manager level but operates under the guidance and delegated authority of the AVP or VP, Claims. The Claims Director is a manager of managers role but may also include management of individual contributors.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university, preferably in Business, Insurance, or related field.
  • Previous team leadership experience required, with demonstrated ability and passion for talent development.
  • Minimum of 7 years of progressively responsible experience in claims and commercial property and/or casualty insurance, managing complex claims and litigation.
  • Advanced knowledge of claims operating practices, litigation laws, and regulations.
  • Ability to lead people and obtain results through others.
  • Visionary thinker with ability to plan over multi-year time spans.
  • Experience in organizational problem analysis and strategic problem resolution.
  • Effective project management and team leadership skills.
  • Ability to organize and manage multiple priorities.
  • Proven track record of attracting, developing, and retaining talent.
  • Ability to work and communicate effectively at all organizational levels.
  • Strong interpersonal and presentation skills.

  • Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Ability to travel infrequently as needed and work outside normal schedule to fulfill responsibilities.

Responsibilities

  • Provides strategic direction and leadership for the assigned claims unit, including severity management and litigation management, as delegated by AVP/VP.
  • Develops, plans, and implements strategic and tactical initiatives to meet business objectives and performance metrics.
  • Identifies and monitors high-severity and/or complex claims, participating in handling, reserving, and resolution discussions.
  • Keeps AVP/VP and senior claims management informed of significant developments and defensive strategies on severe or complex claims.
  • Assists in the management and evaluation of the company's most severe and complex claims.
  • Participates in coverage, liability, and damages analysis, and develops strategies for case resolution.
  • Makes settlement decisions for cases exceeding Claims Manager authority levels, within limits delegated by AVP/VP.
  • Directs activities of defense counsel to expedite settlement of claims, as assigned.
  • Drives and monitors litigation prevention and control through selection of counsel, evaluation, and direction of claim and litigation strategy, as assigned.
  • Monitors and analyzes organizational performance, develops and analyzes key performance metrics (severity, complexity, quality, financial, and operational).
  • Implements, monitors, and maintains quality assurance in claims via the audit process.
  • Leverages management information to enhance team performance and identify trends.
  • Drives performance at all levels within the team, holding members accountable for meeting stated metrics and objectives.
  • Attracts, coaches, and develops talent; provides frequent, specific, and constructive feedback to staff.
  • Provides technical advice, direction, and mentoring to claims staff.
  • Facilitates development and use of individual development plans for ongoing professional development and training.
  • Drives change to assure continuous improvement; collaborates with cross-functional leaders to improve results and contribute to business unit goals, as assigned (rare).
  • Ensures claims handling practices comply with all state statutes and regulatory/legal requirements.
  • Other duties as assigned.
