About The Position

The Office of Councilmember Nithya Raman is seeking a strategic, creative, results-oriented, and highly motivated digital communications professional to serve as a Digital Deputy or Digital Director on our Communications Team. This role will lead the development and execution of digital communications that tell the story of our work, engage constituents, and translate complex policy into accessible, compelling content. This position is ideal for a candidate who is equal parts strategist, copywriter, content creator, and data analyst with experience supporting elected officials, brands or causes. The successful candidate will thrive in a collaborative, fast-paced environment and bring both strong execution skills and sound judgment. Further, the ideal candidate will be a creative storyteller who will drive online community engagement and growth.

Requirements

  • Experience successfully managing digital communications or social media accounts in a political, governmental, nonprofit, campaign/advocacy, journalistic or corporate setting
  • Ability to accurately translate complex policy or government processes into accessible digital content
  • An advanced proficiency and fluency in digital platforms and their norms, audience engagement strategies, and emerging trends
  • Experience with social media and website content development/copywriting, video storyboarding/script writing, and directing graphic design
  • Working knowledge of how to use basic video editing software and graphic design software (i.e., iMovie and Canva)
  • Excellent writing and editing skills, with the ability to adapt tone and message across platforms
  • A basic understanding of City government processes and familiarity with key policy areas such as urban planning, housing, transportation, while keeping up with related current events
  • Familiarity with content management systems (such as WordPress or similar platforms) and digital tools, including scheduling, analytics, and design software
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Demonstrated judgment, discretion, integrity, professionalism, and a commitment to public service

Responsibilities

  • Social Media Strategy and Execution
  • Developing and executing comprehensive digital communication strategies across social media platforms, including Instagram, Threads, Bluesky, TikTok, YouTube and emerging channels
  • Managing district social media accounts, including maintaining a content calendar, drafting captions, editing visual content (graphics and video), and posting timely content daily and at times outside of regular business hours
  • Monitoring and engaging with the online community daily, fostering conversations, responding to DMs and comments, and elevating constituent inquiries and sentiment to the appropriate staff
  • Executing topical and campaign-based social promotions as needed, including event promotion, resource sharing, policy explainers, and webinars/live streams
  • Content Creation and Copywriting
  • Leading digital storytelling efforts that translate policy initiatives, district work, and City actions into clear, engaging, and accessible content
  • Accompanying the Councilmember and staff to district events, projects, and programs to document and share the work of the office
  • Conceptualizing, designing, and directing the creation of high-quality digital assets, including graphics, photos, and video content with the support of the Council District 4 creative team (graphic designer and videographer/video editor) as needed
  • Assisting with or leading video production, including shooting, editing, and post-production
  • Email and Website Management
  • Drafting, building, and managing district-wide e-newsletters and email notices/invitations
  • Coordinating with field, policy, project and communications teams to ensure timely and accurate two-way communication between City Hall and constituents as needed
  • Managing and maintaining the district website, including regular updates, audits for accuracy, and ensuring compliance and accessibility
  • Analytics & Optimization
  • Tracking performance metrics across email, website and social to optimize strategy and continuously growing our database, opens, and click-through rates (i.e. saves, shares, conversions, follower growth)
  • Using performance data to inform strategy, new content formats, and campaign improvement
  • Creating monthly performance reports and lead optimization plans with actionable insights
  • Ensuring quality control review of all materials to ensure content achieves a standard of excellence and is error-free
