The Montana Department of Corrections (DOC) is seeking an innovative, public-service oriented Deputy Director who can effectively lead administrative, planning, policy, and operations functions in a diverse department with multiple locations and facilities. The experienced candidate must demonstrate strong leadership, change-management, strategic planning, and relationship building skills. The Deputy Director serves as a principal advisor to the director assisting with: strategic planning; administrative, contract and budget management; policy development; legislative planning; personnel management; and public relations. The deputy oversees senior management, including division administrators. The deputy reports to the department director. The successful candidate will be required to successfully complete background and driving record checks.

Requirements

  • extensive knowledge of personnel and budget management
  • knowledge and experience in public administration, public relations, government organization, lobbying, state budgeting, and legislative processes
  • strong negotiation, analytical, problem-solving, organizational, and decision-making skills
  • demonstrates integrity and ability to adhere to ethical standards; including when navigating high profile situations
  • ability to effectively manage and respond to politically sensitive and controversial issues and handle public criticism
  • Bachelor’s degree in public administration, business administration, criminal justice or a related field.
  • 5 years of administrative-level management experience.
  • Alternative combinations of education and experience will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
