About The Position

This position directly reports to the Manager of Communications and Marketing and is responsible for implementing social media and content strategies that enhance public awareness and understanding of the City, its programs, services, events, and overall brand. The role creates and supports content initiatives across internal and external platforms—including the city website, organizational materials, social media, and user-generated content—to drive brand awareness and engagement among Gulfport citizens and potential visitors. Additionally, the position strengthens the City’s approved brand identity through the creation and curation of content for social media, the website, email newsletters, and other communication channels. This position is classified as an Essential personnel classification for Emergency Response. This means that during an emergency response this position is required to report directly after an emergency. Essential status is defined as employees whose duties are vital to maintain basic municipal functions during an emergency.

Requirements

  • Demonstrates exceptional writing and editing skills, including the ability to adopt the style, tone, and voice of the City’s approved brand identity.
  • Exhibits a high level of creativity, strong attention to detail, and proven project management skills.
  • Possesses deep knowledge of social media marketing principles and best practices.
  • Demonstrates an active and well-rounded personal presence on social media, with a strong command of each platform and its effective use.
  • Possesses proven skills in photo and video shooting and editing.
  • Exhibits strong communication abilities and creative thinking, using both data and intuition to inform decisions.
  • Demonstrates a solid understanding of SEO and content marketing strategies.
  • Possesses a good eye for design, including the ability to source, edit, and curate high-quality images.
  • Requires experience with Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Possesses experience in graphic design.
  • Must possess a valid Mississippi Driver’s License.

Nice To Haves

  • Google AdWords and Google Analytics experience or certification is a plus.
  • Drone operation experience is a plus.
  • Preferred qualifications include a four-year or two-year degree in Communications, Journalism, Marketing, or a related field from an accredited academic institution.
  • Comparable professional experience, and a background in data analysis, data science, or a related field is additionally preferred.
  • Possession of certifications in social media marketing platforms is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Implement and amplify social media strategies that promote awareness and support for the City, its programs, facilities, opportunities, events, and overall brand identity through the creation and curation of content for social platforms, the city website, email newsletters, and other marketing channels.
  • Monitor the City’s online presence for inappropriate, inaccurate, or questionable content.
  • Provide weekly reports on digital platform performance, engagement, and reach.
  • Create, design, and produce specialized digital content—including photos, videos, graphics, and presentation materials—for the City’s social media platforms and other communication needs.
  • Identify and apply key concepts, tools, and principles related to technical content creation using knowledge of data analytics, data science, machine learning, and AI.
  • Write blog content regularly to expand the City of Gulfport’s digital footprint and increase citizen awareness of programs, events, and City news.
  • Develop, produce, maintain, and monitor the City’s e-newsletter; analyze interactions and audience responses and develop strategies to grow readership and engagement.
  • Create, oversee, and maintain social media content calendars.
  • Produce content that supports tourism, economic development, and prospective resident outreach.
  • Generate content that effectively highlights the City, its community, amenities, and overall appeal.
  • Continuously analyze content performance metrics and provide recommendations for improvement.
  • Collaborate with City departments to coordinate content needs related to social media and the City’s online presence.
  • Conduct assessments of reputation on third-party review sites and advise on best practices for response and management.
  • Educate partners and staff on social media best practices and trends.
  • Serve as a project supervisor for special campaigns and communication initiatives.
  • Develop and recommend strategic digital communication and marketing plans to enhance visibility and engagement.
  • All other duties as assigned by your direct supervisor, manager, director or mayor.
