About The Position

The Dietary Supervisor oversees daily food service operations within the hospital, ensuring meals are prepared and delivered in accordance with dietary guidelines and regulatory requirements. This role provides direct supervision to kitchen staff and maintains compliance with sanitation, safety, and labor standards. The supervisor is responsible for upholding accountability, professionalism, and operational integrity, and serves as the department leader in the absence of the Director of Dietary Services.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • At least 2 years of experience in healthcare or similar industry food services
  • Proven leadership and organizational skills
  • Current/active ServSafe certification
  • Maintains confidentiality of patients and staff at all times. This includes information pertaining to care and dietary requirements as well as confidential internal company information and activities
  • Sensitivity to and willingness to interact with persons of various social, cultural, economic and educational backgrounds
  • Must be able to concentrate on work amidst distractions such as noise, conversations and foot traffic; must be able to consistently meet deadlines; and finish all food preparation at specified serving time; must be flexible in work hours in order to meet patient and organization operating needs
  • Must maintain self-control in volatile or hostile customer services interactions
  • Organizational skills with ability to prioritize tasks

Responsibilities

  • Train, lead and supervise the dietary staff, modeling professionalism, strong work ethic, and adherence to organizational standards
  • Maintain appropriate professional boundaries with staff and patients, avoiding favoritism and any behavior that could create division, including inappropriate language, labeling, or commentary about patients or staff
  • Demonstrate public support for departmental and organization wide decisions
  • Delegate tasks and ensure timely completion of meal service
  • Provide guidance and training to new and existing staff
  • Assist with staff scheduling to ensure adequate coverage and workflow, including managing call off procedures and keeping the director informed of any deviations at all times
  • Notify the director of any accommodation requests, overtime needs, or schedule change requests
  • Monitor and assist with managing employee performance, including training, feedback, and reporting concerns to the dietary director
  • Ensure compliance with food safety, sanitation, and documentation standards across the team
  • Serve as point of contact for dietary staff during shift transitions and emergencies
  • Ensure that staff properly assemble, prepare, serve, and deliver meals, and that all food is processed, stored, and prepared within required timelines, performing these tasks personally only in emergent situations when necessary
  • Maintain high level of kitchen sanitation related to food preparation, dish room activities and employee’s personal hygiene
  • Ensure consistent documentation of food labeling, dating and kitchen procedures
  • Ensure patients and staff are served with a friendly and helpful demeanor at all times
  • Demonstrate trauma-informed and respectful communication with patients and staff at all times
  • De-escalate tense situations appropriately and report any incidents, performance concerns, or policy violations in a timely manner
  • Participates in activities which enhance professional growth and development
  • Upholds the Organization’s ethics and customer service standards
  • Uphold all policies and procedures with staff, ensuring consistent enforcement of departmental standards, including attendance, overtime, and timekeeping requirements, break and meal period compliance, sanitation expectations, and assigned task responsibilities
  • Orders food and supplies for dietary in absence of dietary director
  • Monitors dietary standards daily (log entries) in absence of dietary director
  • Maintain appropriate use of company equipment and technology in accordance with facility policies
  • Maintain excellent attendance and reliability
  • Comfortable working in a psychiatric hospital environment
  • Maintain open availability, including mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays, and remain flexible to adjust your schedule or modify shifts with limited notice based on operational needs
