About The Position

The Design Engineer I New Products is responsible for performing routine duties that require application and knowledge of basic engineering principles. Operating under close supervision, their primary function is to complete basic level engineering assignments by following prescribed procedures.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering (BSME), Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering Technology (BSMET).
  • 1-3 years of experience working in a Product Engineering Department preferred.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience with CAE tools.
  • In-depth knowledge of Engineering design software (e.g. SolidWorks).
  • Understanding of statics, strength of materials, dynamics, kinematics, basic electrical, and basic manufacturing methods.
  • Ability to perform complex design modeling/drafting via all standard modeling/drawing techniques with little or no supervision.
  • Have working knowledge of a variety of raw materials, including plastics, aluminum, and stainless steel.
  • Able to read, understand, and create engineering drawings.
  • Strong Computer Skills (Microsoft Office, CAD, etc.).
  • Ability to operate standard office equipment.
  • Ability to read and use measuring devices.
  • Successfully complete all training required by the safety/training matrix within 6 months, or within time constraints set by governmental regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Create design layouts and product configurations of complete systems and subsystems using 3D modeling (e.g. SolidWorks), CAE analysis tools, and basic engineering principles in response to functional and performance requirements.
  • Create manufacturing routings with related tool costs for potential new parts for external customers.
  • When assigned as part of a design team, leads and directs Design/Drafters engaged in part detailing, drawing creation, BOM definition, and design specifications.
  • Determine testing procedures required for product development testing for design verification and agency certification.
  • Perform design verification testing and complete work request forms for quality department and test lab for documentation of performance testing.
  • Support test lab in development of test setup and test criteria.
  • Evaluate manufacturing capabilities and determine product end-of-line testing.
  • Write Engineering documents such as Engineering Change Request’s (ECR’s), Special Fabrication Request’s (SFR’s), Work Orders (WOR’s), etc.
  • Establish new product bills of materials.
  • Participate in design and product improvement teams.
  • Perform FEA and other engineering analyses in support of product development or improvement projects.
  • Manage change process on current production models.
  • Develop solutions to problems in order to meet customer requirements.
  • Provide direction in building engineering prototypes and pre-production builds.
  • Review user manuals, spec sheets and installation manuals for technical content and coordinate with technical writers and marketing to address customer objectives, product reliability, manufacturing capabilities, product functionality, safety requirements and appropriate standards and regulations.
  • Provide CAD models, drawings, and technical support for any patent filings or marketing requests to support product releases.
  • Provide assistance in the selection and operation of all CAD software and hardware.
  • Respond to, identify, and recommend solutions to manufacturing and quality problems.
  • Provide product information to other resources (internal and external).
  • Act as advisor and liaison between Project Managers, Operations Group, other Engineers and Designers.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
