About The Position

The Deputy Sheriff Sergeant will perform the functions of an advanced full service level deputy sheriff as well as the assigned supervisory duties.

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
  • Act 120 or Act 2 Certification
  • A criminal background check may be required.

Responsibilities

  • Provide supervision of eight (8) to twelve (12) lower-level law enforcement positions in an assigned area such as courthouse security, courtroom security, prisoner transport, inmate holding cell, civil process service and seeing that instructions of each supervisory personnel are carried out.
  • Direct security in assigned courtroom, call for prisoners, interpret court orders and sentences and inform higher level personnel; search individuals entering courtroom when so ordered, observe court proceedings, particularly individuals' activities and demeanor to anticipate and control problem situations; guard jurors and judges during course of trial.
  • Transport individuals from prison to court to and from various penal institutions within the state and for extradition to and from other jurisdictions, drive and/or ride escort in county vehicles to affect such transport, search individuals being transported for weapons, drugs or other contraband.
  • Serve court orders and writs, search for individuals named in such papers, visit home and business addresses and talks to family members; locate individuals and serve papers or apprehend those wanted for bench warrants, probation violations and other orders; execute court orders, injunctions and possessions, taking into custody.
  • Provide security and supervision of inmates within Lehigh County Prison work detail program. Provide security in County protection from abuse and Domestic Relations offices.
  • Perform related work as required.
  • Any other responsibilities as directed by the Sheriff or his designee.
