About The Position

Under general supervision, investigates criminal offenses against persons and property, interviews all involved persons, and collects and analyzes evidence to determine if the crime will meet the standards of the judicial system for conviction or exoneration in accordance with the mission, goals, and objectives of the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office and in compliance with Federal, State, and local laws and statutes.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent; AND three (3) years road patrol experience with the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office or five (5) years patrol/investigator experience with other law enforcement agency, or a combination thereof.
  • Must possess a valid Missouri Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) license
  • Must possess a valid Missouri driver license
  • Must be a Missouri resident residing within 20 miles or less from the Franklin County borders
  • additional training and/or other specialized certifications may be required.
  • Knowledge of County and Department policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of Hand-to-hand combat and defensive techniques and tactics.
  • Knowledge of Forensic interviewing and interrogation methods.
  • Knowledge of Evidence collection and handling protocols and regulations.
  • Knowledge of Investigative methods and techniques.
  • Knowledge of Federal, State, and local laws, statutes, and ordinances.
  • Knowledge of Firearm safety regulations, procedures, and practices.
  • Knowledge of Radio communication procedures and practices.
  • Basic knowledge for operating computers and electronics.
  • Skills in Typing and entering data with speed and accuracy.
  • Skills in Hand-to-hand combat and defensive techniques and tactics.
  • Skills in Firearm proficiency.
  • Skills in Emergency vehicle operation.
  • Skills in Communication clearly both verbally and in writing.
  • Skills in Collecting and analyzing evidence, commensurate with job duties.
  • Skills in Conducting interviews and interrogations.
  • Skills in Determining and applying the proper use of force.
  • Skills in Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.

Responsibilities

  • Enforces laws governed by the Revised Statutes of the State of Missouri and upholds the U.S. Constitution.
  • Reviews and conducts initial and follow-up case investigations; interviews complainants, victims, and witnesses; interrogates suspects; conducts surveillance; obtains various court orders as appropriate.
  • Writes and reviews reports.
  • Works in conjunction with local, State, and Federal law enforcement agencies; generates, gathers and forwards intelligence by networking.
  • Investigates, processes, preserves, recovers evidence and major crime scenes.
  • Analyzes and evaluates evidence, statements, and other available information to determine the validity of a complaint to identify suspects and determine if evidence is sufficient to justify search or arrest.
  • Files criminal charges; obtains warrants for arrest, search and seizure, and grand jury subpoenas; executes warrants; files civil, State, and Federal asset forfeiture proceedings for property and currency seizures; prepares cases for prosecution; provides in court testimony as needed.
  • Tracks and monitors sex offender registration; enters criminal investigation information into database.
  • Conducts background investigations on new applicants, as needed.
  • Provides emergency assistance and responds to dispatched calls for service, as needed.
  • Operates an emergency vehicle in all weather conditions.
  • Maintains mandated training requirements of the state and sheriff’s office.
  • Maintains physical fitness level required to complete assigned duties.
  • Performs other duties as required.
