About The Position

As a key member of the Photo department’s senior leadership team, the Deputy Photo Director oversees a team including photo editors and department managers, operating in News and Business coverage areas. You will drive visual excellence across mobile, desktop, and print platforms, facilitating innovative storytelling and maintaining a high standard for photographic quality and illustration. This role requires a blend of creative vision and operational rigor, as you will facilitate innovative storytelling, manage team budgets, and iterate on global workflows. You will collaborate closely with coverage chiefs, design, and platform teams to ensure our visual content is both impactful and strategically surfaced. Beyond daily production, you will: Lead the team through high-pressure breaking news situations, prioritizing editorial judgment and the safety of photojournalists in the field. Prioritize the professional development of your staff and actively recruit a diverse roster of photographers to bring fresh perspectives to our coverage. Maintain departmental project lists and attending key visual meetings, you will keep stakeholders aligned on milestones while upholding the highest ethical and legal standards for our journalism. You have: At least five years of experience leading visual journalists in a newsroom or editorial setting, with a proven track record of people and performance management. Practical experience working with newsroom security teams to assign and protect photographers in conflict zones or high-risk environments. Demonstrated ability to manage organizational change, create new processes, and build consensus among diverse teams. Proven success in managing distributed budgets and conducting regular financial reviews. Exceptional news judgment combined with a sophisticated understanding of design and mobile-first user experiences. Advanced skill in various CMS platforms and digital tools, with a working knowledge of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript preferred. Experience leading the production of innovative multimedia builds in partnership with graphics, video, and developer colleagues. Excellent organizational skills with the ability to balance short-term breaking news with long-term, cross-departmental projects. This position will be based in New York and will report to the Director of Photography.
