About The Position

The Education Trust (EdTrust) seeks a Deputy Director of Strategy & Operations to join our New York office (EdTrust-New York). The Deputy Director of Strategy & Operations will join a staff committed to fulfilling our mission of closing opportunity gaps that disproportionately affect students of color and students from low-income families. This dynamic and high-impact role leads internal operations as well as strategy development and implementation for EdTrust-New York, serves as a member of the office leadership team, and manages the Research and Communications functions. The Deputy Director establishes and maximizes internal team structures to advance EdTrust New York’s mission and impact in the region and also has opportunity to represent the organization externally with partners and funders. Ideal candidates would have a good working knowledge of the New York education policy landscape from an equity lens to be able to provide leadership capacity and support to our policy and advocacy efforts. EdTrust is committed to advancing policies and practices to dismantle the racial and economic barriers embedded in the U.S. education system. Through our research and advocacy, Ed Trust improves equity in education from preschool through college, engages diverse communities dedicated to equity and justice, and increases political and public will to build an education system where all students will thrive. This role, available immediately, works from a home office in New York or New Jersey, with preference for proximity to New York City. The Deputy Director l reports to the Executive Director and supervises a small-to-midsize team.

Requirements

  • At least a bachelor’s degree in education, public policy/administration, or a related field
  • At least10years ofrelevantexperience with increasing levels of responsibility, including supervisory experience, with a preference for nonprofit management experience
  • Significant familiarity with P-12 education policyinNew York/ New York City
  • Shared belief inEdTrust’smission and a commitment to improving educational equitywith a focus on racial equity
  • Dedication in contributing to andmaintainingan equitableworking environment
  • Exemplary project management (including time and budget management) skills, witha track recordofsuccessfullydeliveringprojectson-timeandon-budget

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate withtheExecutive Director to set the long-term vision and direction for the New York Office,and translate that vision into short and long-term goals with relevant work plans forthefunctionsunderthe Deputy Director’s purview
  • Oversee thecommunications and research functions,including goal setting and work planning, resource allocation, andprioritization
  • Lead a dynamic team byidentifyingandretainingdiverse talent,coachingand developing directreports, and managing andassessingperformance
  • Serve as a member of theEdTrust-New Yorkleadership teamto develop theannual work plan and budget,monitorprogress toward team and team members’ goals, and coordinateteam professional development
  • Lead internal work(e.g., retreats, meetings,systemsand processes)to build alignmentand foster cross-collaborationaround strategic planning,goal setting, and day-to-day work; progress monitor to support goal attainment
  • Overseeprocessesrelated toEdTrust-New York’soperational effectiveness, includingstaffing and talent development, budget creation and tracking, and office operations toensure smooth and efficient internal systems and processes
  • Build and managekey internal and external relationships to increase efficiencies, support clear and efficient decision making, and advance the priorities ofEdTrust-New Yorkand the Executive Director
  • ElevateEdTrust’sresearch,policyand advocacy priorities byrepresentingthe organization in external meetings and developing relationships with key external stakeholders, peer organizations, policymakers, legislators, leaders, funders, and other advocates
  • Contribute todevelopment work,including drafting grant reportsand proposals, analyzing grant impact, andin some casesmanaging funder relationships
  • Liaise withEdTrust’snational office on operational matters, including fundraising, finance, and human resources
  • Support theExecutiveDirector with special projectsas needed, particularly serving as a policy generalist to support the team in policy developmentand advocacy strategywhere needed
