Job Description SUMMARY: Under general supervision, the Deputy City Marshal enforces compliance of City, state and federal codes and ordinances; performs housing, environmental and zoning inspections. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS : Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge, and skills. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following: Conducts daily inspections of nuisances, locating and inspecting unsafe structures and fences in need of repair, researching the current ownership and verification of violations for properties, preparing cases not resulting in criminal charges for abatement, maintaining an awareness of projects needing permits, and submitting liens for recording at the County Clerk’s office. Provide building security at City Hall and bailiff duties for Municipal Court. Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community. Reviews documentation reports for accuracy and compliance with City ordinance and other applicable Laws Act as a liaison with other outside agencies, the public, and between management and subordinate personnel. Contact and coordinate with other law enforcement agencies in matters relating to the investigation of crimes and the apprehension of offenders, disaster preparedness, training, information systems and records management. Anticipate libelous situations; reduce or eliminate civil exposure. Answer questions from the public concerning local and State and Federal laws, procedures, and activities of the department; participate in community meetings, including oral presentations. Investigates complaints concerning shift personnel. Employees may at time be required to work in order to provide for the safety and well-being of the general public, including the delivery and restoration of vital services, in the event of an emergency. Establishes priorities to coordinate, plan, organize and complete work in accordance with sound time-management methodology. Provides liaison services with local, state and federal officials and local neighborhood groups. Supports the relationship between the City of Galveston and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with citizens, visitors, and City staff; maintains confidentiality of work-related issues and City information; performs other duties as required or assigned.
