About The Position

The NC Department of Adult Correction is a large state agency with over 14,000 employees, responsible for safeguarding lives and property, and the care, custody, and supervision of adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons, probation/parole officers, and divisions like Health Services and Rehabilitation & Reentry. This specific Dental Assistant position is located at Marion Correctional Institution in Marion, North Carolina. Marion Correctional Institution is a close-custody prison for male offenders and serves as a healthcare hub for this population, with a maximum capacity of 793 offenders. The Dental Assistant performs skilled work, providing technical assistance to dentists and primary clinical support for patient care in various clinical settings. This includes maintaining supplies, sterilizing instruments, preparing trays, explaining procedures, assisting dentists chair-side, preparing materials, operating oral evacuation equipment, monitoring patients, completing records, taking x-rays and photographs, and instructing patients on oral hygiene. The role may also involve orienting dental and dental assistant students and potentially supervising other dental assistants. Travel to other DAC facilities may be required to support Dental Health Services.

Requirements

  • Completion of a dental assistant program from an appropriately accredited institution
  • One year of on-the-job training as a dental assistant
  • Required x-ray training when needed
  • Pass a background check
  • Adhere to the US Dept. of Justice Final Rule on the "National Standards to Prevent, Detect, and Respond to Prison Rape" (PREA Hiring and Promotion Prohibitions)

Responsibilities

  • Render technical assistance to dentists in the care of dental patients
  • Provide primary clinical support for patient care by performing dental assisting duties in a variety of clinical settings
  • Maintain inventories of supplies and equipment
  • Clean and sterilize instruments
  • Prepare and arrange instrument trays for clinical use
  • Explain procedures and provide support to patients
  • Pass instruments to the dentist during dental procedures
  • Prepare impression and filling materials
  • Operate oral evacuation equipment, retractors, and water/air sprays
  • Monitor the patient’s behavior and vital signs as requested by the dentist
  • Complete patient records and charts, billings and reappointments
  • Clear and clean the operatory and instruments
  • Take routine x-rays and photographs
  • Instruct patient, family, and/or health care staff in basic oral hygiene
  • Orient dental and dental assistant students in the utilization of dental assistants in office management, patient relations, and routine chair-side procedures
  • Supervise other dental assistants (work may include)
  • Travel to other DAC facilities, if necessary, to support Dental Health Services (may require)
