About The Position

Schaffer Library's DELTA program (design-based, experiential learning with a team approach) is seeking Union College students for its second summer project. The project involves developing a low-cost, educational digital escape room for library information literacy instruction, to supplement an existing in-person escape room and reach a wider student audience. The DELTA project team, comprising students from various academic divisions, will collaborate to assess the future of information literacy instruction. This includes determining the optimal use of technology based on library staff needs and effective communication strategies for the campus community. The Student Assistant, reporting to the Digital Collections and Preservation Librarian and the Reference and Instruction Librarian, will receive training in project management techniques, cross-disciplinary collaboration, challenges and solutions for gamifying instruction, and library responsibilities and resources.

Requirements

  • Ability to work in a team environment
  • Experience or interest in user experience (UX) assessment / usability or human-computer interaction
  • Interest in systems design and team-based development
  • Written and verbal communication skills

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with technologists and researchers to develop a prototype for the library to use in the classroom or remotely
  • Bring stakeholders, designers, product owners and engineers together to build, maintain, and evolve a robust information literacy game for students.
  • Design the aesthetic elements of user interfaces and design systems.
  • Write for the web, ranging from crafting effective labels to creating user instructions to developing long-form descriptions of services, collections, and guidance based on stakeholder requirements.
  • Use technical writing skills to document your project’s output and usage through creation of a Quick Start guide or small manual.
