The Dean's Study Fellow is responsible for teaching study and learning skills to other students and devising and modeling study strategies to enable students to master the subject matter of their courses and acts as a mentor and role model to new students to ease the transition into law school. This is an in-person position.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled at the Barry University School of Law in good academic standing.
  • Professional oral and written skills to include email correspondence.
  • Ability to exercise the highest level of professionalism, sensitivity, and confidentiality.
  • Ability to effectively teach/communicate study skills and assist students with legal analysis/exam writing skills.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word, online web courses, and Westlaw/Lexis.
  • Ability to demonstrate enthusiasm for the Academic Success Program.

Responsibilities

  • Weekly Learning Labs. The Dean’s Study Fellows will plan, prepare, and participate in weekly workshops as part of the Comprehensive Legal Academic Success Program (CLASP). Each group of Dean’s Study Fellows is responsible for creating the lesson plan by providing specific details of the workshop.
  • Collaboration With Professors. Dean’s Study Fellows will collaborate with 1L and 2L class professors in order to make the weekly workshops relevant to students. There is an expectation that during the first week of classes fellows meet with all cooperating professors to whom fellows are assigned. This initial meeting is in addition to the weekly communications with the cooperating professors outlined below. Dean’s Study Fellows should make every effort to serve as an ambassador of the Comprehensive Legal Academic Success Program (CLASP) when approaching a professor.
  • Marketing. The Comprehensive Legal Academic Success Program (CLASP) has contributed to the success of many students since its inception in 2003; however, there remains a certain group of students who truly need assistance but fail to seek it each year. Therefore, Dean’s Study Fellows should make every effort to market themselves, the workshops, and the Comprehensive Legal Academic Success Program (CLASP) to encourage students to participate.
  • Student Meetings. Many students will want to meet with Dean’s Study Fellows individually, particularly if a fellow has the same professor the student has for a certain course. Dean’s Study Fellows must be available to meet individually with any student seeking academic counseling. It is not necessary for fellows to hold office hours at a designated time and place; however, Dean’s Study Fellows should provide days and times when they are available to meet individually with students by appointment if so requested. In person meetings must be held on campus at an agreed time and place. In person meetings are encouraged to take place in the Comprehensive Legal Academic Success Program (CLASP) office or conference room.
  • Billable Hours Worksheet. In order to plan and improve the program each year, it is necessary to track how Dean’s Study Fellows spend their time. Therefore, you are required to upload a Billable Hours worksheet to Canvas. Time should be recorded in 15-minute increments (0.25), and it should be recorded on a daily basis to reduce the risk of inaccuracies.
  • HR Workday Submission. Dean’s Study Fellows who hold paid positions must also submit their hours via Workday by 8:00pm each Friday. Workday hours must correspond with your Billable Hours Worksheet. Any time discrepancies should be explained on your Billable Hours Worksheet.
