About The Position

Serves as the chief administrator for Motlow’s library system, which includes four campus libraries, two XR Labs, and Testing Services across all campuses. The Dean provides leadership for library and testing operations by collaborating with library staff, faculty, staff, administration, and the broader library community. Responsibilities include planning, budgeting, reporting, supervision, and evaluation of services delivered both on-site and through distance education, while advancing initiatives in emerging technologies, digital collections and preservation, information literacy, resource sharing, and effective space utilization, and guiding the implementation of the libraries’ core services and long-term strategic goals.

Requirements

  • Master of Library Science or Master of Library and Information Science earned from a regionally accredited institution with program accreditation through the American Library Association (ALA) with a minimum of three years of progressively responsible work in an academic library including exempt level supervisory, management, and/or Director level experience.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the principles, theories, objectives, and practices of library management and library science.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively communicate with a wide range of individuals and constituencies.
  • Ability to create and manage a budget with various line items.
  • Ability to make data-driven decisions.
  • Ability to collaborate and communicate effectively, both in writing and verbally, with college executives, faculty, staff, students, community leaders, and other stakeholders on matters pertinent to the college including interpersonal interactions, public speaking, and individual or group presentations.
  • Working knowledge of books, eBooks, DVDs, digital resources, and library databases including cataloging processes.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of customer service and UX design principles and the ability to apply them in a library setting.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the use of D2L or a similar Learning Management System, cloud storage, Microsoft OneDrive, and Google Suite.
  • Maintains relevant and current knowledge of library and testing best practices through continual professional development and/or attendance at professional development events.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective positive working relationships with college executives, faculty, staff, students, community leaders, and other stakeholders on matters pertinent to the college.

Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership, direction, guidance, development, oversight, unit budget management, and policy formation for Library unit
  • Recruit, train, and support other members of the library team
  • Ensure compliance with, TBR, MSCC, THEC, and other applicable agencies policy.
  • Ensures that the students have access to library and testing services regardless of the student’s location, teaching site, or class modality (web, independent study, etc.)
  • Seeks input from academic departments about holdings, services, and needs.
  • Builds and fosters relationships with campus and community constituencies to develop and enhance relevant library and testing services.
  • Responsible for ensuring the optimal functioning of the integrated automation system and website; ensures appropriate preservation of essential data and records.
  • Maintains reference and circulation services and interfaces regularly at all campus locations.
  • Ensures Information Literacy instruction.
  • Responds to and evaluates students’ and library users’ needs and requests.
  • Reviews library and testing website development and maintenance.
  • Ensures availability of interlibrary loan services.
  • Reviews collection recommendations and approves all collection purchases.
  • Coordinates with library staff and faculty to review and evaluate database purchase recommendations.
  • Approves collection development purchase recommendations.
  • Supervises all aspects of cataloging and technical services.
  • Responsible for the administration of the integrated library system.
  • Works with library database vendors for purchases and to troubleshoot any access issues.
  • Works with local public and school libraries for the mutual benefit in the delivery of library services to the community and to students.
  • Initiates and encourages library use by local K-12 students.
  • Works with academic libraries, including Tennessee Board of Regents’ institutions.
  • Attends professional library association and Tennessee Board of Regents meetings.
  • Speaks and represents the college as needed at local civic group and organization meetings.
  • Reports library statistics to the Executive Vice President of Academic Affairs and, as necessary, the campus and to state and national agencies and associations.
  • Evaluates library and testing services using survey instruments and reports findings.
  • Plans for library and testing services.
  • Evaluates library and testing space needs and plans library layout.
  • Evaluates and requests library and testing equipment.
  • Serves on campus committees.
  • Seeks input from all constituents for moving library services into the future, including the establishment of regular meetings of the Library Committee and integration of emerging technologies to support academic enrichment.
